Power saving shut-off
first thing yes check the cables and inspect the pins. ive seen bent or broken pins that are about to fall out
Does your monitor have a power-saving feature? most monitors released in the past 5 or 7 years automatically shut down when they are not receiving a signal. this is Low Emission standards i believe. you see your monitor releases radiation waves causing radiation polution so they started doing this. it also saves energy.
as you may know anything that creates alot of heat or cold uses lots of energy. A good comparison would be flourescent tubes using much less energy than common incandescent light bulbs used in most lamps. Those bulbs are very hot
Anyway,
The first monitors that did that were too sensitive and buggy and nearly instantly shut down, like when your PC changes graphics modes from like say 800-600 to 640-480, it might just turn off.
All the new monitors i've seen won't shut down unless they haven't recieved a signal for more than a few seconds. instead of instantly.
If that is the case, a few monitors have a Power-Saving feature defeat switch so you can disable this. IF thats not your problem or it is your problem but there is no defeat switch, then sorry.
I've never seen a monitor die so i can't comment on that, but monitors are hundreds cheaper than they used to be. And with so many floating around, you can easily find a used one for about 50$ or less

I had a monitor die on me. After using the comp for like 15 mins the screen went dull and I heard a "bbzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzTAH!" and on the TAH! part it shut off and started smoking a lot. It scared the crizap out of me. And it smelled really bad, and I had to leave the basement. I think some dust must have built up or something inside.
At any rate, it doesnt sound like your monitor is really dead, just some bad connection or what VirusType2 was saying.
