Yesterday and today I've had considerable trouble getting my monitor to work. The power was on, but it didn't connect to the computer. I unplugged and replugged all cables several times, and restarted the computer five times before it finally worked. Today it took me nearly half an hour to get the ****ing thing working. Where do you think the fault lies? With the monitor, the computer or the cable? Once it has started to work it worked flawlessly for hours.

So I guess you can't pinpoint what could have fixed it, since you tried so many things.

It sounds like a signal problem. Could be the cable, the connectors, or the inputs.

- Had you moved anything before this problem started?

- Do the pins look OK?

- I guess a bad ground could cause this, so be sure everything related to the cable and video card are secure.

- Obviously it could be a bad cable. If the cable does not detach, then you will have to try something else.

If all that checks out, then it could be a problem with your video card or monitor. Best way to test is to try another monitor or video card for a day or two.

Well yeah, the fact that it only malfunctions during the start-up and never after would indicate the problem lies with the computer rather than the monitor or cable. Unfortunately, I have no other monitor or video card to test out.

You sure you didn't mess with some setting - like say, power saving, or something? set it to extended desktop? (swapped it)

Don't think so. Although, this started occurring for the first time after the computer had been in power saving mode when I left it, but when I returned it had shut down for some reason. Also, I couldn't turn it on again without removing and replugging the power chord. After that was the first time the monitor didn't respond. You think there's any connection there?

EDIT: To clarify, the computer was still starting up as usual when the monitor didn't connect. I know this because of the login sound was played.

I really don't have much experience at all with hibernation or sleep mode or whatever. I just lock the desktop (Windows+L) and turn my monitor off when I'm leaving for more than a couple hours.

It really annoys me when something goes to sleep when you are using it, which can happen, depending on the application.

My only suggestions are to closely examine your monitor settings using the OSD, and check the power saving options in the Windows control panel. Maybe there is a setting in your video card control panel as well.

Are you talking about the power cord to the monitor? Try another power cord. If nothing seems to work and you need more ideas, maybe check to be sure your outlet is grounded. My surge suppressor has a ground fault indicator.

Well, some updates. It was definetely the computer's fault. Last friday the monitor started to work more or less as usual although now the computer frooze about a minute after you logged in. I turned it in at the store I bought it, and it was still covered by the warranty as it's less than two years old. Will take about three weeks to have it fixed, so I'll be away a lot. But tbh it couldn't have happened at a better time, as I have en exam thi week, and this forces me to study more than i probably would've otherwise.

Three weeks to take it to a tech??? Do they even work on it or are you just paying for them to send it to your manufacture.

Well, as I said, I'm not paying them, as it's covered by the warranty. But yeah, they send it away to some other place, and three weeks is a pain in the ass. But what can I do? I won't take it to some other placed and get charged a lot when I can have it done for free.

Time for an update, my online comrades. So I got the computer back after three weeks, and do you think the ****ing thing worked? No! ****ing incompetent tossers.

There were three problems with it when I turned the computer in. 1) The screen only connected randomly to the computer during boot-up, you had to try several times to get it to work. 2) The computer frooze about a minute after logging in (except in fail-safe mode). 3) The internet didn't work.

Only the second of these problems are fixed. Internet still doesn't work and it still only connects randomly to the screen during boot-up. I visited the ****ing store again, and they said it would be another three weeks to fix it again, and they didn't have a computer in that I could borrow in the meantime. Wankers, I'm gonna report them to the consumer ombudsman. I'm not gonna wait another three weeks to have it fixed, I'm gonna go someplace else where it will hopefully be fixed quicker. I've located the faulty internet to the network card, I hope it won't take long to replace that.

Did you reload the OS anytime after you got the computer or is it still running the original installation that came with your computer? Is this a brand name computer or did some shop build it?

It's a brand name computer (Acer), and it's the original OS. If I knew jack shit about this stuff I probably could've fixed it myself, but since I don't, I'm taking it to another guy today, who claims he can fix it in an hour or two for a fairly low price.

It works! The guy fixed in in five minutes, although I had to take three buses to get there :/

It feels like I've carried my ****ing computer everywhere across town in the last month, and it's not like it light. D:

Ah well, now it's over, hopefully.
