Monitor trouble

Well, my old computer in the family room recently began having freaky problems with the monitor. The monitor was a very nice 21" Sony Trinitron. The other day while my sister was on it the monitor suddenly went very blurry. It's so blurry that you can't actually read any of the text on the screen or even make out any pictures. Sometimes the monitor will pop back to normal for a split second but after that it goes blurry again. We left it off for threee days straight after that. When we did try it again it worked for three hours or so and then, blurry.

I disconnected the monitor from the computer and noticed that the "No connection" warning was also blury, this lead me to believe that the monitor was the problem.

To be sure I lugged a 7 year old monitor up from the basement and hooked it up. Everything was working fine for that one. It booted up, the Windows XP loading bar came up and loaded, the mouse appeared in the center of the screen, and then all of the sudden the screen went blank. I was pissed and tried 10 more times to no avail. I then booted up in safe mode and I was able to get into windows no problem. I thought that maybe the monitor was not capable of displaying the resolution the computer was set to when we had the Trinitron (1280x1024). But in safe mode I could not lower the resolution. The problem is I have no way to change the resolution because you have to be able to see to do it ( can't be done in safemode). Neither monitors work now and the third is hooked up to this computer and a pain in the ass to disconnect.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix the problems I'm having, or at least what they are. The Trinitron is a bit over a year old and should not be dead. The older one, well I don't know if it's capable of 1280x1024, but it is 7 years old. Any ideas?

If you can, hook it up to your TV and lower it.

It's a good idea but I can't do it. The family computer has a terrible graphics card.

it sounds like there is definatley something wrong with your 21" monitor, is it still under garantee? as for the second problem, there must be a way to change the screen resolution without going in to xp, not sure how though

I have problems with my old trinitron. It isn't blurry but sometimes it makes popping noises and the monitor dims and distorts for a split second.

Obviously my problem isn't as serious as yours (and could just be a problem with with the lectircal cord its plugged into).

But maybe the old Trinitrons are not of the finest quality.
