More bad news for the Canadian tobacco industry

why would you want sue them?

Two Quebec legal firms said Friday a class-action suit has been filed claiming $17.8 billion from the industry, on behalf of about 1.78 million Quebecers addicted to nicotine.

That's one reason..also we can sue them for medical issues...basically all the stuff they should be sued for.

^It's not like they're forcing you to smoke their product. It's our fault for buying into the ads.

That doesn't matter. If the court says it's ok to sue them for that reason, people will jump on that really quickly.

well Im gonna sue Mc Donalds then

Some one tried to sue them because they got fat for eating too much McDonalds. It didn't work out....and I know your asking "Why can you all of a sudden sue the tabaco industry for relatively the same reasons? (just different consequences)"? I don't know and don't care...all I know is that people are gonna make a lot of money off this.

No the damn lawyers will not the people thats what you do not understand.

I know not the people, but the government will.

I thought Canada was supposed to be the sane one :/

Hey... there's enough stuff out there of people trying to keep kids and adults off drugs(and other things, like cigarettes and alcohol).

If you didn't listen, well then **** you. As much as i'd LOVE to see the tobacco industry crippled(which this won't do), its not right to preach about free choice and then go back around years later suing the people. You accepted the concequences back then. Live with it now.

Obviously this doesn't apply to all areas of life, but I think its the best choice here.

Somebody got hooked on cigarettes (out of their own choice), developed a few health problems, and now wants to sue the tobacco industry.

**** that.

You made your bed. Sleep in it.

Lets face facts though, smoking is a disease and no-one likes walking down the street and inhaling a lungful of butt ash.

Mc Donalds at least has the excuse that they are providing cheap food. Also, you really cannot say hamburgers are addictive.

Cigarettes, beyond being addictive, serve no real purpose. And in exchange for that, they're a huge health risk that sucks up our tax dollars on medical bills and so on.
I've met people people my age who can't stop smoking despite financial problems and poor health.
It's like adding grape flavour to antifreeze, then selling it with claims for 'new great taste'.

That said, I don't think most smokers deserve the money. It should go into buying schools and police and whatnot instead.
But I fully endorse having the industry lose as much money as humanly possible.

Not that I really believe it... but there are actually scientific studies out there that say hamburgers and french fries can become as addictive as heroin for some people, with all the fat and sugar cells in them.

I can find lots of stuff claiming this... but I don't necessarily believe it.

Having said that, I can attest that I *DO* find myself addicted to great tasting hamburgers and french fries sometimes ;) I have to force myself to eat something healthier <chuckles>
