May PC Gamer has a interview with Gabe. He says they are planning 4 episodes.

They started the 1st two at the same time. Separate teams working on both at the same time. As soon as episode 1 is done that team will start on episode 3. Episode 4 will NOT be made by Valve and it will have a stand alone plot. SHEPHERD ANYONE??!! Another thing worth mentioning is that the 1st 3 episodes will finish the Half-Life 2 story arc. When asking about Half-Life 3 he said it all depends on how well the episodes sell, but that he really feels episodes is were its at. He also says they with episodes they are willing to take many risks they couldnt before. An example given is "a third-personal tactical game set in the Half-Life universe"

This is big news and i think this plan will work and be great. Im still more for full big games but i think all episodes as a whole will be greater then 1 game. Which is why im all for it. I hope they continue the Half-Life franchise and wish valve the best of luck with this new model.

Thoughts?

Shephard? Or maybe the 7-Hour War.

Personaly I want the 7-Hour War. Not some 2nd rate third party version.

Also, if they started at the same time wouldn't that mean Episode 2 is almost done? HELL YES! :D

let us bring back the old days of HL2 speculation and excitement!

oh my god !
SHEPHERD
SHEPHERD
SHEPHERD
SHEPHERD
SHEPHERD

PLEASE LET IT BE SHEPHERD !!

awesome news btw
thanks

I hope and pray it is not Shephard. Please, don't be Shephard.
Anyway, good news on the episodes and...well, very interesting.

Yes, I'd say so.

hot564231 over at the Black Mesa forums claims that after questioning about a return for Shepherd, Gabe responded with "I'm sure we'll get back to him one of these days". In the past, Gabe has been quoted as saying that he was fond of the character. I'd say that the possibility of a Shepherd expansion has been raised somewhat.

Equally, Laidlaw has gone on record as saying that the missing week of HL2 is one of his favorites, so he must have some idea what happened then. Whether there'll be a game to tell that story...

4 episodes is a nice number, but I want more damnit! Sure it just about beats HL1's tally of 3 Expansions (incl Decay), but I'm a demander. They'll round off the Gordon HL2 saga, and then they can go and give us all the other shit we want to see. Or we shall storm their offices and demand the head of Gabe Newell! Or perhaps just steal the source code for TF2, which we doubtless just be a slip of paper that says "boy were you suckered!"

eh? How is that in the least bit obvious. The war lasted 7 hours. Being tactical about it seems kind of pointless. I'd expect an all out shooter... now, Shepherd and a bunch of AI team-mates wandering round in any time period? Sounds more likely. Or a game where you play a Combine Metro-cop conducting raids on Resistance strongholds, that's more likely.

Worth noting BTW, that try as I might, I cannot find out what Gearbox are doing after "Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood". They opened new positions for 3D Character Artist and 3D Artist, but there is nothing in there so blatant as to make me think "ooh... looks like they're hiring for a HL2 episode!". The title they're hiring for is simply called an "upcoming 3D action title." It is worth mentioning that they licensed Unreal Engine 3 some time ago though. I think it's up in the air whether part of the company is doing some relatively simple work on a third party's game to keep the money coming in. I think they'd be fools not to... but that's up to Valve if they've hired them or not.

So if it's not Gearbox, then who else? Turtle Rock? Someone who Valve have distributed games for through Steam? Someone new?

Please, anything but third person!
I refuse to play May Payne in HL universe :/

Shephard and the 7 hour war = shens
You ask me, 7-hour war is simply too much of an undertaking for anything less than a series of episodes or a full blown game. There's far too much new art, too many enemies and too much story to create to have it be a flash in the pan project.

Yes yes oh yay.

Well if the 1st 3 episodes finish the half-life 2 story arc, I think we can assume that those 3 go in chronological order, therefore leaving the 4th episode with the possibility of going back in time as such? covering the 7 hour war here seems to make much sense...

Sounds great. I wonder if it's somehow connected to the "top secret" project that they are working on.

How pages long is the interview? I want to read it all!

yes scans please.

I feel kind off sad that it will end so soon. I dont know, i was expecting like 7 episodes :p

Why dont they make the 4th one themselfes?

thanks for info - but I wonder how long after Episode 1 is released, Episode 2 will be released :borg:

I reckon 6 months. My worry is Episode 3, which it seems they haven't started yet. As what is supposedly the last episode of a trilogy, it'll probably require even more work than Episode 1 which has already taken a year and a half. We may not see it until 2008.

Seeing how Aftermatch onely had half the team working on it, id say episode 3 will onely take half the time episode 1 did!!!

The maths doesn't quite work, considering that team 2 won't be finished with Episode 2 at the same time as Episode 1, and there is nothing to say that said team will help with Episode 3 instead of being redirected to an entirely new project.

Works only in theory. Valve have the job of making the last episode t3h pwnage.

With Episode One shaping up to be awesome, and Episode Two being worked on at the same time, it's quite fair that both will be awesome. Episode Three, however, will blast every other FPS franchise to pieces for the entire team's gonna be working on it.

Sounds like a plan to me.

Indeed, escpecially the Half-Life 3 part.

I assume at some point we’re going to say, and our fans are going to say, “That was really great for awhile, but now we want the big one.”

So we have a lot of storytelling to do. (laughs) We have more story to tell than we have ways of communicating them right now.

What?!?!?!?! Simpson is gonna be a movie!? :O

Intessting article. Maybe they will make more then 4 episodes then, And finish it of with a big one? Just as i dreamed.

Yup that would be great. 4-6 eps. and then a Half-Life 3 oh man that would be great.

Gearbox is currently working on Brothers in Arms 3; however in a recent interview they had this to say

Randy Pitchford: I'll give you a hint - Brothers in Arms isn't the only video game brand Gearbox will build.

Here's another hint: Gearbox is capable of doing several next-gen projects at once. Our lead teams have worked on the best brands in the business and have participated significantly in building our own brand.

Here's a last hint about a couple of the things we're cooking up - When we started Gearbox, we planned to make things we thought would be great and to work on other people's things we think are great. Halo isn't the last time Gearbox will work with something we didn't invent from scratch.

Veddy interestink.

Are they going to make Darwinia? The same project they talked about in RTB?
