Left 4 Dead reviews have been overwhelmingly positive over the last week, with a score of 88% at Metacritic as of today.

Fast zombies? Check. Non-stop tension and intensity? Check. The quality of gameplay we expect from Valve? Check. When it comes to co-op multiplayer, Valve is consistently ahead of the curve and excellent at making games that force players to work together.

It's got all the nail-biting high tension of a control point assault/defence of Team-Fortress 2, mixed with the tightly designed levels of Half-Life 2 and the weapons of Counter-Strike. As long as they keep introducing new missions, there's no reason why it won't be sucking on your bandwidth for years to come.

IGN UK 9.2/10[br]One of the finest zombie games ever made, and one of the finest co-op games ever made. The potential for everything to go so, so wrong without warning, or conversely to pull off the most spectacular escapes against all odds, means this is an online shooter you can tell your finest anecdotes about without boring everyone else to tears.

I'm addicted. It's rare that I enjoy a game this much from the get-go. This is a brilliant, tightly executed shooter that feels fresh and exciting.

Left 4 Dead didn't just meet our high expectations for the zombie apocalypse, it exceeded them.

I can't recommend Left 4 Dead highly enough.

Valve are extremely pleased with Left 4 Dead and the positive reviews. Also Left 4 Dead's pre-order numbers surpassed those of The Orange Box, by more than 160%.

all I can say is holy ****ing shit...they've created a phenomenon

Left4Dead 2 Gravity gun Portal gun zombie MMO!

Im not suprised. My theory for why Valve kicks too much ass: One of the employees must have found the holy grail and is using it for buisness...

But how did they get the Grail out of Petra?

The second game Valve's been involved with that got less than a 90 on Metacritic. :O

Yeah some idiots reviewing it have marked it down for not being as good in single player/not having a good story in single player.
The world's full of dumbasses, le sigh.

For not being as good in single player/not having a good story in single player.
What the hell?!

If they have more ideas or knowledge, why they shouldn't make a better game with better story of L4D?

I agree with them that the lack of a story really detracted from the game. It was so wierd seeing a Valve game that didn't have even the most basic of stories. It lost about 10 points out of a hundred for that one in my book.

Thats basically saying TF2 should lose 10 points for not really having a huge story... L4D is NOT a story driven game, its a coop and action driven game. This was always the intention and even 2 years ago Michael Booth always said "the story is pretty simple, its the zombie apoclypse and you have to survive with your friends"... Its not supposed to be bound by this complex story with all these characters and history like Resident Evil... Its a 'get-in and play' game where you shoot zombies and have fun... I feel like having an important story would detract from its major replayablity, unless of course the story is different through every play-through, but come on. It is pretty neat how you can find bits of info scattered throughout the maps on what happend... Sure, the overall narration, which is story is lighter respects, could have been slightly stronger, but shouldn't cause the game to loose 10 points...

I agree. This game was not meant to have a story. It's just coop multiplayer fun.

EDIT: by the way, it's my strong opinion that multiplayer games can't have a story. you may set a background (and L4D does it), but not a fully developing story.

But I don't think that a story would've been interesting for TF2. They could've done some great stuff with L4D but IMO they missed the opportunity. It would've been interesting to know more about the background of the outbreak, its implications, etc. Instead it's just "there they are, shoot them", which is fine for those who could care less about storylines, but I'm not one of them.

They didn't miss the opportunity. Like fiber said a strong storyline would detract from replayability.
Also it's meant to resemble the horror film genre, zombie films in particular. They aren't well known for stories covering much more than 'survivors try to survive'.

It didn't need to be a deeply engrossing and involved storyline like HL2's. Just a little more background information would've been ten times better than none. It's just a personal preference. Like I said, just enough and presented in such a way so that the interested such as myself could be interested and the uninterested who just want to play the game could ignore it.
