If the admins werent on power trips closing every thread they see. They only possible reason to close a thread if it turns in to a massive flame war, and EVEN THEN I don't think its needed.

Let people talk dammit, and stop closing or deleting every thread that isnt specificaly about half-life. Makes things more interesting.

Have a guess at how many people visit these boards every few minutes...

If every little pointless thread was allowed then there would be sooooo many you wouldnt be able to post jack shit!

This forum is very tidy and ordily thanks to the GREAT mods. If it wernt for them there would be HL2 spoilers evreywhere and it would just be spam spam spam.

If you dont like it, leave :)

Stupid people get too much freedom of speech already (take this thread for example)

If it's posted in the wrong forum then we usually move it to the right one, and we only close it if it's completely pointless, spam, or has flaming. I can't speak for every mod of course, but those are the general guidelines.

WTF is he complaining about? what threads have been closed that are so important to him?

Heheh, great line PrvtRyan :p

EDIT: dunno chimp....
Maybe one of the "Where can I get the HL2 beta!!!?!?!?" threads.....

More people would use these boards if anything were happening in the world of hl2 beyond

<randombloke'sname> Hey I'm starting an hl2 mod! I don't know how to code but I have a great idea!

Or some such flummery.

Threads will be closed when containing pointless spam , repeated threads , offensive material and yes sometimes for being in the wrong forum. Hardly a power trip. These rules have served us well and will continue to serve us well. If you feel you can't put up with such conditions ......

no no he's entitled to an opinion. Perhaps he would prefer a return to the days when we had threads every 3 seconds on illegal material or offensive spamming , or ........

There is a forum for discussing the website , a forum for discussing hl2 and a forum for general stuff all on these boards. Do the math

I think those are generally found in (or are moved to... not deleted) the forum known as... "Off-Topic"... perhaps you should look into it...

heheh

Don't worry, i'm all for free speach....

I dunno, just gets on me nerves a lil.
I have been a almost day to day user of these forums since I joined up (Ages ago) and I havn't seen many beter forums...
I don't want another spam fest moron forum

I agree with marksmanHL2 that the moderators here are excellent in keeping the forum spam-free. I browse this forum almost hourly, and I hate it when people make pointless threads that distract me from the ones that actually contain stimulating discussion!

I'll discuss this with the other staff, but this is my views on posts in this particular forum.

This forum is for Half-Life 2 Discussion, hense the name "Half-Life 2 Discussion". Already in this forum there are threads (such as this one) that technically shouldn't be here but we're being lenient as it is. As marksman said - this is the busiest HL2 community around and we get stick from other communities saying that we're too strict and this isn't a fun place to come to anymore. But the only reason we're like that is because if we weren't then people would try to get away with anything.

I will lock a thread if:
  • It's gone off topic from it's original post and is just attracting spam
  • It was created for malicious or flaming reasons
  • It will create a reaction that will lead into a flame war
I know what these threads look like. Trust me, despite what some people might think occasionally of my choice to close some threads, I've been around enough to know what kind of reaction some things are going to get.

I will delete a thread if:
  • It's offensive. This obviously includes explicit material, racism and the usual stuff.
  • If it has no purpose
    e.g: "Hey I rule. Discuss"
  • If it contains inappropriate comments aimed at staff, other members or unnecessary comments at aimed at other parties like other sites.
  • It is just generally off topic and has no logical place in any of the forums.

I will move a thread if:

  • It is off topic and belongs elsewhere.

  • You forgot:
  • If it contains the word "beta".
I've lost a lot of posts because of that one.

*looks up*

yup, pretty much what Chris said here too. We might come across as b*stards from time to time, but if we didn't do anything you'd have Usenet, no protection and god knows what turning up in threads. We're trying to limit the deleting of threads if there's something useful in them as that messes things up for users performing searches.

So if something gets deleted its for a very good reason and unless its _really_ inapropriate atleast a couple of other mods have been asked their opinion on what should be done with it. Best bunch of mods I've ever worked with I'll say that much *accepts bribe* :D

If anyone is concerned why a thread was deleted, moved, locked, if the reason wasn't clear. PM the mod who did it and ask them for a reason, 9 out of 10 times you'll get a friendly response.

Though I'm now adding a what I'm about to do and a reason line when I do do something so people aren't left wondering, aswell as giving a friendly warning sometime before hand (which arguing with isn't going to help matters so I wouldn't recommend arguing about things, just sends a thread closer to being moved or locked)

Worst thing anyone could do though is start a new thread just to ask why their last one vanished or something, one user I remember well did that over some issue and what he could have resolved in an hour or less ended up taking two weeks or more :(

Agree....

The admins must be like 5 years old...

Atleast they act like it.

Oh I also delete threads when there's lots of closed ones cluttering up the page. And if there's beta spoilers/content.

The questions have been answered. If you still don't agree with the way we run things here (I can't think of a logical reason why you shouldn't like it) then I suggest you stop wasting your time, and ours, and go find a forum you deem "more user-friendly".
