So, I got some RAM for christmas, installed it and now the computer doesnt even boot. A little light comes on the mobo when the power supply is on, but aside from that, nothing, no fans, nothing.

Im afraid I may have zapped the mobo when I put the RAM in, I know my way around the inside of a comp, I held on to the case when I toched the inside ect.

I am so pissed.

What can I do to test to see what I did wrong/broke?

Thanks

My advice is to check through everything again and again just to make sure you did'nt knock a main cable out of place.

Then again it is weird how your computer doesn't turn on at all. It should atleast turn on saying there is an error with your RAM or HDD...

My guess is that it is something to do with your motherboard... Does your computer bleep at all when you press the power on button? If so how many times?

goss

Ive checked every cable I may have touched, and all that I couldnt have touched. The computer makes no beeps, nothing on the monitor, It just sits there with the psu on and a litte green light on the mobo, and does nothing, no matter how many times I press the power button.

You sure you didn't yank the start buttons wire out?

Hmmm ok... Have you tried switching the power on at the mains socket? haha sorry. no joke i have seen this happen before. :p

Is the power supply you are using the one that came with the case? Also what power supply is it?

P.S : I'm trying my best to help you mate :D

Try taking out the new RAM that you put in and seeing if it turns on then.

Good idea. Here's another one you could try to get it on,

Open your case up and take the 20pin power connector out and put it back in, see if that helps.

I took the new RAM, out, no differende. Gonna try the power connector.

goss you have no Idea how many times I checked that thing hoping it was the problem.

Ok man just trying to suggest as many things as possible for you. I know how frustrating it is!

Ok, That friken power cord is on damn good, I cant even get the thing off, probally from years of being left alone. I wiggled it around, tried to turn it on a couple times, no cahnge.

Yah, thanks goss!

No probs :D

Did you check to make sure that your motherboard supports the type of RAM you bought?

It's weird how it doesn't work now even though you took the RAM back out.

Yeah if it's on REALLY tight i wouldn't bother but if you think you have a chance of budging it then pull it out, give it a clean, then plug it back in.

The RAM should be supported, I went to a computer shop, the guys there are really good, showed em what mobo I had and said gimme a 512 stick that works with this.

well if the motherboard did not support the ram he inserted it would have set it to the setting it can use. Im guessing u have 3 DIMMS, try to put the ram in a DIMM u havent used yet...u may have blown a DIMM SLOT.

No, I only have 2 DIMMS. :(

The problem now isnt the RAM, its that the computer wont even start.

First, always turn the switch off on your powersupply when putting in new cards or memory. For now just turn it off, let it sit for a few seconds and then turn it back on.

Second, there are PC standards but there still can be incompatibility with memory. Sometimes brands use different chips with the same product. Look at the memory.

ok i presume you have a manual for you motherboard, try re setting you motherboard BIOS settings to defualt ..you will have to locate the CMOS switch, Its usalll got 3 pins and is covered my a small white box cover. You will have to refer back to your motherboad manual and see where it is located. reset the bios then restart your computer See if that helps.

Ok, when I turn the computer on, nothing happends at all.

Just one odd light on the mobo, visible only with the case off, and thats it. That light is on whenever the psu is on. Nothing happends when I turn it on, no fans, no beeps no boot. nothing.

so you reset the CMOS then?

It looks to me like you maye have damaged the motherboard. Since you said you have tried it with the new ram uninstalled and it still dont work, there is a problem. try to boot the machine up with no ram in at all. The computer shud beep if it doesn't there is deffinately summert wrong with the PC.

Ok, Ive tried the Bios and everyones suggestions so far, thanks for the help guys but alas it was to no avail. :(

Nothing like zapping your mobo on christmas.

see if the cpu fan is pluged in. try both ram chipps indevidualy in both sockets. see if all your pci cards are in correctly. take out the cpu and put it back in again. take out the battery, leave it for ten seconds and put it back in, replace the cord from the wall to the psu.

^ Ive done everything but the CPU, im just gonna take it in to a shop and have em take a look.

Don't take it to pc world if you live in the UK.
