conversation between player and GM over clarification of sexual oreintation rules that were brought to the spotlight with the recent banning of recruiting based on special interest groups:

the jist of it:

the GM is saying that players are not allowed to have an ingame wedding if the couple is gay, he even goes further to say that two game characters cannot get married if they are of the same gender even if the real couple is heterosexual .........because it may offend someone somewhere

http://cathodetan.blogspot.com/2006/02/blizzard-gm-no-same-sex-marriages-in.html

[GM] Once again, while it does have good intentions other players may take offense to it

[Sylveri] So if, for example they wanted to have an in game wedding, as many heterosexual couples do.

[GM] Could be reported

[Sylveri] Anything can be reported, would they be warned or suspended?

[GM] Yes if you review our policies it would be under Sexual Orientation

[Sylveri] So there’s no reference to sexual orientation ever, unless it’s heterosexual?

[GM] Once again, while you may not think there is no reference, other players on the realm might think there is

[GM] Yes, two females getting married

[Sylveri] But who defines what’s “offensive?”

[GM] Our policies will state that

[GM] Anyone can report and we will take appropriate action

[GM] While it may seem ok because they are truly a heterosexual couple in real life, in game they are two females

[Sylveri] I see, well thank you for your time. I’m sorry that the world hasn’t come farter
I will admit I’m disappointed, my guild enjoyed this game immensely. Again, thanks for the clarification.

[GM] Please keep in mind, you need to worry about the other players

[GM] While I do understand where you are coming from, there are those who do not have the maturity

[Sylveri] So we suffer because of their lack of maturity

[Sylveri] I understand Blizzard’s position, but that doesn’t mean we like it, or will support it.

[GM] I am sorry you feel that way

blizzard keeps digging themselves further into a hole ..had they left well enough alone this wouldnt have blown up in their faces

I don'tplay WoW, but from the outside it seems to me like Blizzard has unfortunately become accustomed to the culture of ignorance and lack of manners. Surely instead of worrying about the concerns of players who would be likely to say "LOL GTFO FAG, REPORTED", they should worry instead about cracking down on those who would start chucking insults like that around in the first place.

It's a sad comment about the state of the net, but I can see where they're coming from. We have to remember that WoW is a business, and between the polite player who wants to have a good time, and the bigoted idiot teenage kid, the average player is the bigoted idiot teenage kid (outside perspective here, forgive me if I'm wrong). Blizzard aren't about to alienate the source of most of their money.

I play a Japanese MMORPG and the level of politeness is INSANE. I feel like I have to put on a suit every time I play. Then I come back to western chat rooms and western games, and everyone is a fag, a n00b, a twat, a n*gger...man, it's like stepping through the looking glass. Unfortunately you wont get around this type of Blizzard situation as long as much of the money paying, net using public in the west is bigoted in some way.

some very good points, always good to see someone who doesnt play the game understand the issues of what's at stake ..and I agree western gamers tend to be immature but I think that's mostly in certain games ..for example CS: it seems to be full of some of the most hateful immature gamers I've ver encountered. When I played exclusively mac games (yes there were a few games) I didnt run into nowhere near as much hate as I do as a pc gamer ..but I think that's more about demographics than attitude

Seems kind of odd to discriminate against in-game weddings based on sexual orientation when there are multiple species involved. I mean, does that not strike anyone else as just slighty odd?

I think blizzard really dropped the ball on this one...

some people might take offense to sexual orientation, so instead blizzard jumps in and discriminates against those orientations?...gee that makes a lot of sense...

Thats officially the dumbest shit I have ever heard about a computer game. That tops the Counter-strike.net forum thread that protested a lack of "ethnic and Sexual (M/F) diversity" in character models. God why do I play WoW?

Everyone wants the taurens, they are well-endowed.

Quit being douchebags Blizzard.

Its a goddamn game. Who cares? I'm sorry, but most gamers lack maturity. Seeing two male dark elves or whatever the hell races are in the game marry will make their "WTF LOL" alarms go off.

anyone notice that the latest update includes a separate Guild recruitment channel? Blizzard must have been scared shitless when Lambda came a knocking

You forget CptStern, that children play these games. If the world was perfect, marriage or relationships of any sort would not be tolerated at all in-game.

Rofl... WoW is a social Phenonemon, that makes me want to throw up.
WoW is just running around yelling "LoL!", now, Starwars Galaxies was social

jeez, whats wrong with "just playing a game"...
So you can have ingame marriages? -> that should be deleted/forbidden. Why? It spawns this kind of crap. Didnt anybody at Blizzard think that this kind of problem could spawn?
Just let gays marry ingame who cares? :)

Next discussion: "why arent the humans in WoW black, chinese or arabic"..

there are black and asian skin tones in the game.. :/

It's just a game. Who cares? "OH NOES I CAN'T PRETEND TO HAVE AN INGAME HOMOSEXUAL RELATIONSHIP!!!"
Remind me who the immature one is.

But they still look like big muscular nordic men. <chuckles>

And that was always a problem for me. I can't stand that big man look. I want a normal, athletic character. But nooooo...
