Right, so back in the day when i had Dial-Up, I got this download program-FreshDownload-which helped ease the heinousness of a 56k modem.

Now, having recently upgraded to super-quick broadband and uninstalling FreshDownload , I find that whenever I try to download an exe file a screen pops up in the browser-"FreshDownload could not take over the download"... SO basically, I can't download stuff. I deleted the registry values, set the download defaults to ordinary on Firefox... And it still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

Change the file type association for an exe file from Freshdownload to nothing? Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types.

Or you have ticked the "always do this for exe files" box in Firefox when downloading an exe file. Find out how to undo that in Firefox, or do a clean un-install - re-install of FF.

Argh... I uninstalled, got a fresh copy of Firefox 2 , installed, and I still get the same problem... But, I've realised I can download exe's with Internet Explorer, so all is well. Kinda.

*edit*-And thanks, man.

It sounds like it is being caused by your FF settings. Did you manage to do a CLEAN un-install - re-install of FF? That is VERY different from just a normal un-install, which "remembers" settings etc, in case you re-install. Did you delete the FF folder in Program files etc? Google for a proper way to totally remove FF AND its settings, and you should be fine.

Also, before (and after) you do a clean install, make sure your download settings are set to "always ask where to put a file" etc, so that it doesn't just do the "always use FreshDownload to handle this filetype (exe)" that you have ticked. And set any other download settings you can find to "ask" or similar.
