Morrowind runs horribly, please help.

I got a 9800 Pro with 1024 ram and 3.0 CPU and morrowind still chugs. I want to solve this problem and those assholes (no offense, the forum is just dead) at the Morrowind forum can't help (they just shrug their shoulders).

I just wondered if anybody has any hits for making it run better.

I know it's not about HL2, but hey, I gotta pass my time before HL2. I just hope there are no Test at my university when HL2 comes out, cause I'll be failing them for sure.

Try turning down real-time shadows (that is the biggest performance killer). Also try and run Morrowind at a decent resolution (ie 1024 by 768).

Also, search Google for something called Morrowind FPS Optmizer. Its a nifty program that can change settings (like view distance) on the fly.

Morrowind is a beast to run but is such a fun game.

Well, morrowind is a beast.... but it runs fine on my 2400+ M (@2.3ghz) 512mb Ram, 9600pro system.

Turn realtime shadows off. period. 1) they kill performace. 2) they're possibly the ugliest shadows i've seen in a game.

THe MW FPS optomizer is good, but I also deal with lower fps to see further. It's a 1player game, so it's not like it absolutly critical (other than for your eyes) to run at high fps.


Try updating/rolling back your drivers...

I got Morrowind to run fine on my GeForce FX 5500 with 1024*768, shadows, pixel shader, and max view distance so it should run fin on a 9800 pro.

As you hear, shadows are the rig-killer in Morrowind. Next comes water effects, draw distance and resolution.

just install the fps_optimizer (google for it) make sure you get the correct version for the version of morrowind your running, play with the settings and that'll improve frame rates, mine never drop below unplayable and i get twice the view distance default, plus truform, plus 1280x1024 resolution. Also hunt around for a tech page detailing how to improve frame rates by editing the ini file. There's also a number of mods you can download that will also help improve things speed wise.

Though the resolution doesn't infact effect morrowind's frame rate. Someone did a test and found it ran just as fast on the highest res as it did on the lowest

Definately turn off shadows though, and set the AI up (using the optimizers method) as that makes a difference also.
