OK, so there was talk of closing this forum down, but bollocks to that, I want to discuss Morrowind too.

I got the game about a fortnight ago, but I'm having a horrible time getting into it. I've tried having a little look around the place, but any highwaymen/bandits etc that I bump into always draw some ridiculous enchanted weapon and tear me a new one.

Travelling itself is damn slow. My character so far has a low athletics skill and my fatigue doesn't last very long (when running, jumping and the like).

I eventually found the mages guild and joined, but was swiftly kicked for stealing (that's another thing, I can't differ between what items would be stolen or not).

All in all, it's pretty frustrating. What kind of advice can you, (the people) give me? Any particular mods I should grab too?

Ok when your stealing, be crouched. When nobody is looking at you your cursor changes and then you can steal with a high chance of success.

Do some quests to get some money. They don't all present themselves openly. For example in the place where you start there are rumors(talk to people) that the tax collector was killed or hasn't been seen. This is a quest. His body is just out of town. You get payed decently for this.

When you steal something from a shop, don't sell it back to the shop. They will know its theres and attack you.

Silt Strider ports and boats take you place to place. Also if you feel the game is to slow create a character that has high speed. Be sure to have smart major and minor skills.

Goto Balmora up near Casius' house (I think that's his name - been bloody ages since I played it last), and when you have some free time there should be a set of stairs near it that turn off to the right to a door. Run up the steps and jump off until you get your athletics and acrobatics up. I know it's tedious but it'll help you better than running around losing your fatigue where you could be attacked.

With stealing, position yourself out of line of sight, even if it's just behind a pillar or box. Light and dark don't make a difference unless you download a thieving plugin which uses the light/dark as a modifier for the skill.

Also if you want speed, go for archery too. When you get your acrobatics high enough you can jump onto a high rock and just riddle the enemy with arrows, then pull them back out of his corpse (best with a "get 100% of your arrows back" plugin). swords are for pansies :D

Heres a little...horrible little cheat..

crouch and weigh the forward button down by a wall.

Why crouch? Just press "Q" and it auto-runs, and go into a wall, leave it for a day, and your athletics will be through the roof!

I'm kidding, don't cheat, this is one of the few games where cheating actualy makes it worse, and less fun. (it's not that fun to goof around even with cheats like GTA...)

Also, for the first time, I'd recommend you not play a Mage, or join the Mages Guild, Mages are kind of tough, because it wasn't balanced around them, so there crappy to play, unless you have experience with the game, high level mages kick nuts, though.

The easiest is probably a Theif, not an Assassin, because stealing is easy, and the Theif Guild missions are easy, but, for example the Morag Tong (Assassins guild, hard to find *SPOILER*check the arena, a secret trap-door ;) )

Warriors are tough if you've got a decent difficulty setting on, if it's 15 or lower, don't even bother, then you can kill most people with a few swipes, I put the difficulty on 50 or 60.

Mods:

- Better Bodies
- Better Heads
- Morrowind Comes Alive (only if you've got the expansions)
- Better Magic Icons (the default "blue swirls" around an enchanted items are replaces, I hate thsoe blue craps)
- Most Texture Replacers are good
- Glow Away (takes the "glowing" of enchanted items away, so they appear as regular items, makes the game more realistic)
- Response Expansion
- Real Singposts (turn the jibberish on the signpots into real words)
- NPC Dialogue (there is a site the mod creator made for this)
- If you REALLY want it realistic get Complete Morrowind, although I don't use it, it makes the game TOO realistic IMO. It just adds more abilities, like making your own armor, chopping down trees for wood, crafting spoons.. Just download it, and read the readme, it does ALOT.

I use about 70-90 mods, but I'm not going to list them all, these are just the really good ones :)

Also go to Morrowind forums to ask any little noob questions, you probably won't get a reply for an hour or so, but they know what they're talking about.

Morrowind Forums.

Here's a site for Morrowind mods, it's easy to search for all these, just copy/paste it into the "Name" box and you'll get the mod.

That was it!

Thanks for all the info huys, appreciate it. I think I may start again, as a warrior based character.

I wasn't actually starting out as a theif, my gripe was not being able to distinguish between what items count as stolen and what items don't.

Ach, I'll keep trying, it's a tough nut to crack.

Well be smart, don't get caught stealing. Thats the major thing. It isn't not what you can and can't steal. You can steal everything, just do not get caught.

No no no, I'm not intentionally looking to steal items, it's just I get caught because I don't know any better. If that makes sense.

E.g: Mages Guild - there's some plants growing in a corner of the main room in the Vivec (I think it's Vivec anyway) guild hall. Pick any and I get busted for stealing.

It's being used to Oblivion, the little red hand that indicates an item will be/is stolen.

Ah, well lets put it this way: In a city\town everything that you see belongs to somebody.

Started up a new character a few days ago. A dark elf with varying long blade/destruction/marksman skills for combat, born under the steed because I hated my slow-ass first guy. D:

Marksman is a far handier skill in Morrowind than in Oblivion. Throwing stars and the like. :E

Still not left the first village yet. I've managed to find a few "quests" in and around the place. And I completed my first bandit cave. I can see myself playing this a lot over the coming months.

It might be time to download and install some visual enhancements now.

I always feel like installing Morrowind again after reading this thread.

****.

I feel like reinstalling Morrowind whenever I'm bored, but then the incredibly annoying combat system enters my mind.
:|

well wait a minute... isn't that ILLEGAL!?

Make a wood elf, with high sneak, and then whatever else- gives teh win.

Once you learn how to steal things properly, its extremely easy... I made over 150k gold worth in items from stealing in my first 30 minutes, which is why I quit... way to easy to become powerful IMO

That's why I don't actually re-install it lol.

I found that, still, there seems to be so much more depth than Oblivion.

I agree, but I still love Oblivion more...

Perhaps people will make mods for Morrowind taking the stuff they loved from Oblivion and putting it into Morrowind...

The combat was awesome in Oblivion
