XBOX REVIEW (I don't have the PS2 version)
MK fans, buy, do not rent, this game, you will not be dissapointed one bit. This game is amazing. I just picked up MKD last week and been playing it since. I was blown away with how good this game is. The fighting has improved so much since DA. The reversals and taunts and all those have been taken out, and replaced with throws and combo breakers (they work amazingly).
The uppercut is back in mortal kombat and better than ever. The uppercut is used in many stages as a way to knock your opponents off stages and into death traps. That brings me to my next topic, death traps and stage fatalities. Once again returning are the stage fatalities, and now you don't have to wait till the end of the round to use them anymore. The stages are much more interactive than any fighting game I've ever played. Some stages have stage weapons which are extremely powerful. The death traps blend well with the environments sometimes up to 3 death traps are in the stages.
Classic stages make a return, such as the MK2 portal/mk3 choose your destiny screen, MK1 courtyard, MK2 Dead pool, and of course, the MK1 pit. Dead pool and the pit both have stage fatalities. Also when you unlock these stages, they show up randomly in the arcade mode.
The character roster IMO is the best roster since MK2. We have baraka and millena returning. (2 characters not seen in a very long time) Kabal (which should please many fans who havent seen him in 10 years) and Ermac. Scorpion and Sub Zero (what would MK be without these 2) and Noob-Smoke (their ending is jaw dropping, you won't belive it),some unlockables and many more.
The online play is lag-free (except I had a few minor issues before, but they're all fixed now). Getting into an online game is as simple as choosing xbox live from the main menu, clicking quick match, selecting what match you want, and you're there. Of course you can choose optimatch where you can pick what match you want or you can make your own. The online feature is just amazing.
The konquest mode you have to look at as an extra. The voice acting isn't that great and neither are the graphics. But you can't compare a thrown together mode like this to final fantasy. If you don't expect much from konquest, it won't be so bad. You go through konquest unlocking things like characters, arenas, alternate costumes ect.
Puzzle and chess kombat are addicting modes that come with the game. Puzzle kombat is like a tetris game with MK characters fighting on the bottom as you play the tetris game, ending in a very gory finish for the loser. Chess kombat is really fun, you choose MK characters for your team and move the around the board like real chess pieces. The sorcerer can cast spells like kill, ressurect, imprison, ect. But the catch is they can only use that one spell once then they can't use it again. If you defeat the king (leader) the guy you beat him with automatically does a fatalitiy on him.
Finally, the fatalities. There are 2 fatalities per character again (the way it should always be). These fatalities are better than ever. Distance is brought back in fatalities, meaning no longer can you stand 10 feet away from your opponent like in DA, and do a close fatality like a brain rip from that far away. Now you have to be standing at a certain distance from your opponent. Also hara kiri's are suicide moves that prevent your opponent from doing a fatality on you after the "finish him".
Good: The fighting game is great; online play is stellar; lots of krypt unlockables; returning characters and stages;uppercut is back;death traps; great arenas; puzzle and chess kombat are great; multiple fatalities;hara kiris
Bad: Konquest mode isn't all that great-crummy voice acting and bad gfx make it sub par to most players.
Final score- 9.5
Amazing game.
