Mount and Blade is an independently done RPG. It is still a WORK IN PROGRESS and over the two years I have been playing it, it has come a long way. It still has quite a bit left to add, but already offers quite a bit of fun.
The most resent release is a beta's beta. They basically do it in groups: They release the "stable" beta, with finialized features, then release a number of independent changes via the forums (not the front page).
They offer the game for free up to level 6; after that you need to pay for a key. I reccomend buying it vs stealing it, because they could use the help.
It is a psuedo-medieval low fantasy game, with no magic. The battle mechanics are based around mounted combat, and if used right cavalry will dominate battles. That being said, properly used infantry can nerf horsemen very fast.
The last stable edition added in a whole crap load of new factions (used to be only 2 joinable factions), and you find this on their mainpage. If you want the most up to date edition, their forum has it -- it changes the world map totally, which is weird to be because I've been seeing the same map for the last two years.
When you buy the game, you get a CD key via email. Save it. You can use it twice every 90 days, so basically find someone else interested in it and split the key.
It's fun and I invite you all to try it out.
