I just bought a new mouse (hardware thread) which is very nice, but I'm having trouble in games.

Basically I've always had ball mice, and this is a laser mouse (Logitech 610 or something). I've got into the habit of repositioning the mouse on the desk by lifting it slightly and moving it to where its comfortable.

Its something I do because in some games you can end up running up a spiral staircase, and you run out of space to move the mouse.

Problem is that the mouse still works when its hovering in the air (whereas a ball mouse wouldn't) and my character moves around when I'm repositioning the mouse.

Is this just a habit I'll have to get out of, or is there some way around it, say reducing the sensitivity of the laser or something?

I've never had that problem with my 3 button microsoft mouse :P

How far do you lift it from the desk?

Weird Habit :S

I think it's time to change the mouse sensitivity ingame so that you won't have to move your mouse so much even in looong stair cases.
But I sometimes have to lift up my optical mouse when i play RTS games, but then i make sure that I lift it high enough. or do I lift up my mouse? I haven't noticed if i do or not. that's weird, i should find out if i do or not.

You'll get used to it. Just lift it higher so it does not track.

yea when i went laser it ruined my game of TFC for about 2 weeks. I kept lifting the mouse to re-center it on the mousepad, and my crosshair would go WEEEEE to some corner.

It just takes time to get used to.

My mx700 only tracks to up about 0.3cm above the surface. Any higher than that and it stops responding.
