If you want to host it from your comp you're going to need server software running.

::Is reminded of all the sites i've been to with broken images that have urls of something like C:\bunnies.jpg::

i want to know this also, what do you mean by some server software running?!?!?!?!?!

EDIT: BTW, why is this in newbie central?!?!?!?!?!

You can't host off your harddrive unless you're running your computer as a server, running apache for php etc.

You can just get a simple ftp or http server

I use the baby asp server from
http://www.pablovandermeer.nl/downloads.html

They also have an ftp server thatd prolly work better for files

Hello and Welcome!

btw, if it's just one file, you might want to use a free file hosting service

lol ive been here for ages i just out this in the newbie section as i couldnt think of anywhere else....:E

thx anyway

Ok, just to explain things a bit further, this is a synopsis of how it works.

The client (A guy browsing a web page) sees a link to a video and clicks it. His browser (internet exploder, firefox or whatever) sends a message to the machine the video is on saying "I want to download this file (The video), please send it to me". If the machine is not running special software, it does not "see" the message, or rather, it ignores it. However, if you are running some sort of file distribution software (Http server, ftp server etc) then the software sees the message and sends the requested file to that machine that requested it.

You don't actually need to know the above, but its always nice to learn somthing new. If you want to let people get the file staight from your PC, you will need to do the following:
Download a http or ftp server. there are plenty of free ones out there, search google and that ill get you started.
The second thing is you need people to be able to find your machine. If you have a static ip, you can just use that, if not, you will need something that stores your ip at a single location. Visit ww.no-ip.com and sign up with them. That will allow you to give a web address that points to your machine, and is updated whenever your ip changes.

Finally, especially if you have a small connection and your file is large, consider making the file a torrent and distributing it that way.

Hope that helps
