there is a new law in LA that, if caught in a theater w/ a movie camera, could get you fined a quater million $ and a year in prison.... i admit i do download some movies.... but i have no other choice! if they gave us an online copy of a movie for $7-$8 for a permanent copy... i'd buy it...

discuss

i'll download the odd film that i can't find anywhere else. old war films for example don't make it to dvd, some of the old british classic films aren't even on video anymore, so the internet is a good place to find em.

As of now, movie piracy (aka cam in the theatre) is very impractical and low-quality. Not surprisingly, the majority of piracy is done not here, but in foreign countries where either the prices or the lack of supply has turned people to alternative methods. But technology is changing...
However, I'd like to point out a result of piracy: basically nothing. Movies still continue to make $100 million+ dollars (at least the good ones do). It has yet to take a chunk out of the business yet, unlike the unfortunate (might I add, deserving) RIAA.
Therefore, I found it ridiculous when Mr. Valenti of MGM decided to ban screeners, a HUGE mistake. Not only does that scream of poor sportsmanship (MGM won ZERO Oscars that year), it was seen as a blow to independent films that are normally out of voter and public reach, one fine example being the superior "The Pianist".
Pirating movies is very popular (turn on Kazaa, and search for 'The Last Samurai'...right now...) but as a film afficiando, if I like it, I WILL see it on the big screen, nothing beats it.

If you can believe it, I've actually never downloaded a movie.

The only movie I have d/led is Boondock Saints. My friend recommended I check it out...since it wasn't at my local video stores, I d/led a good copy of it. I loved the movie..and bought the DVD.

I would never d/l a good movie unless it had really good quality and I had already seen it in theaters.

As said before, nothing beats the big screen.

exactly...the only movies i've downloaded or watched without paying were movies not out on DVD for met to buy yet (like the LOTR movies, which i already saw in the theater) or movies that everyone said were REALLY bad (like battlefield earth) and i just wanted to see how bad they were without contributing financially to (read: encouraging) bad movies.

as an add-on to javerts post, 99.9% of normal people don't know where to find movies to d/l.... u have to be in on the underground... and to get there u have to go through me! :smoking:

EDIT: i had seen Matrix: Revolutions in the theater and i had downloaded it to see something again to understan it and just because it was so... freaking... awesome!

and i agree... movie piracy isn't as big and music piracy.... everyone and their sister's grandma knows how to d/l music.... but 1 out of... 30 know where to find movies

I've never downloaded a movie before, but thats because I have dial-up. ;(
Even if I did have high-speed though I still wouldn't download any movie that I can still find with relative ease in any store.

This means you know nothing of movie piracy buddy. You probably wouldnt believe what kind of quality movies they can put out now. And the shit you find on KaZaa is very much misleading into the kind of quality that is out there, obviosuly as you probably can tell i have downloaded movies before, but i also do go see them in the theatre. i would suggest going to [snip] to get an idea of what you can see, the site isnt illegal as you cant download anything or find out how to download anything there but they do have sample jpegs of movies.

No offense because i dont want to start anything with a mod, but i have had my sig for a very long time and not one person has had a problem with it.

actually.... it leads u to an IRC search engine.... which leads u to movies or anything that exists on IRC... srry buddy!

How can that site get in trouble for something another site does smart ass.
Oh and this site was featured on 60 minutes, i think they cant do anything to it so far ;)

posting links to warez can result in a ban here...
take down the link

why take it down it isnt illegal you cant download anything from it, i was posting it so that you can see what kind of quality they have of movies being released latley.

im at a loss as to where it takes you to an Xdcc search engine i have been going here forever where is the search enging at?

i PMed the instructions to u

pmed you back
since the site i posted is not warez or affiliated with warez, i dont feel the need to take it off, and it can lead you to an xdcc search engine which is not illegal or warez either (its just a list), as you dont even know wether those files are real or not, its not illegal to download a movie file that isnt even a movie.

PMed u back... again

[cough] back on topic [/cough]

yes... even cam movies are getting higher quality and a lesser amount of quality is lost thru compression.... and piracy in general will never stop... even with that paladin thing microsoft thinks it can pull off... :dozey:

I rent em, and if they're good enough I'll fork out the cash and get the DVD. I have watched downloaded movies, but only through friends who have em on CD :cool: Oh and I downloaded some obscure anime but I'm pretty sure that's legal... somehow ^^;

Downloading movies is too much of a risk, the MPAA will hunt your ass down.

I used to download them, but that was back when I was in school, now I have a job if I want to see a film I go to the movies or rent it, if I like it I will buy it after..

Bleh, I dont care if people download movies, it does not KILL movie makers.

I speak of mainstream and the current trend, not academy screeners or hi-res digital recorders. I know what you speak of, and I know what I've seen.

I think I downloaded about 60-70 movies by now. It seems to be a good alternative to renting, especially if you have a fast connection.

However I hate the "shakey-cam" videos for obvious reasons, and would much rather pay to see the movie in the theater.

I download alot of DVD rips... the only way the movies are losing out money from me is because I don't rent anymore (which was rarley anyway). I still buy the DVD's I would have normally brought, and I still go and see the good movies in the cinemas. Hell who wants to ruin the experience?

Oh and I also do it on the rare occasion I want to see a movie, but before it comes out. For example, the DVD rip of S.W.A.T was released over a week before the UK cinema date, so I saw it then.

When it comes to screeners I can't be arsed. The quality just annoys me.

(Oh and my computer is linked to my big ass TV via a wi-fi card in an old laptop that acts as the server to my flat... so I get the good sound system with AC3 sound)

p.s The RIAA has no power over Europe. And the intelligent among us use a peer gaurdian anyway :cheese:

Yeah, because they're going to hack into your computer then take you to court. Whoever did it would face prison and you'd be able to sue them.

Fraid it doesn't quite work like that. You'll often find they don't bother with single users either because the amount it costs to research you then raid you, then do legal proceedings etc, etc is an insane amount.

Is that your list d33? If so then hear me out my friend... Admitting you have a problem is the hardest step, then denial, anger, and acceptance. I'm only here to help, breathe in-----out.... ok, good :cheese:

I've downloaded a few movies here and there, but I've never really been happy with them. I'm too much of a quality whore to ever be satisfied with the quality, even most of the ones I got from a friend who is connected into the trade of illegal copies.
Just for the hell of it, thought I'd mention that that same friend was contacted by his ISP with a cease and desist under pressure from MGM and a few other companies.

I know a friend who has 5 harddrives plugged in, which makes a total of 800+gb space... of movies and music and whatnot.
But he's currently running out of space so he has been burning a shitload of DVDs to get extra room...

anyway, as for myself, I download movies that I've seen before in the cinema and when it's released on dvd I (might) buy them... like, the LOTR movies. Also, I download old rare movies that I can't find on dvd in any stores. Charlie Chaplin, B&W war movies, etc.
If anyone got a problem with that, they can all go to hell!!! Yes, that includes the RIAA, but since I live in Europe I guess it doesn't matter.

The only things worth downloading is SVCD and DVD-R... the usual cam vcd is a joke..i cant belive how people can watch movies like that..

I used to download a lot of movies when i first got broadband.
Pretty cool, free movies "delivered" at home, sometimes even before they hit the cinema or videorental.

But after a while i got fed up with scouring the internet for the movie i want, getting queued, bad quality movies, choppy sound, screeners etc etc...

It's just a lot easier for me to rent a movie and pop in the dvd player.
Besides, i didn't buy a widescreen setup to watch bad quality movies on my PC monitor.

Only real exception i make is for pr0n and weird anime shit we don't get here.

Rentalstore + dvd player = perfect combo for watching high quality movies on tv.

Seriously, i think it's just too much of a hassle to look it up on the net, download it, burn it, hook up my vidcard to my tv (or using one of those divx players, which i'd have to buy), rearrange my PC sound equipment, just to watch a movie.

No thanks.

I'll run to the store, pick something, be back in 5 mins and begin watching.

I hate waiting.

Doubt you'll ever get a bad quality movie again.
