Moving Steam between drives question

I want to preload HL2 just in case I decide to switch to a steam purchase. Now, the drive that I currenlty have steam installed on doesn't have enough space. I tried copying steam over to the new hard drive and start it up, but I think it still is downloading to the old one. Can I just reinstall steam then copy everything within the old one to the new one? Or what is the process to do so?

You should install Steam itself again, but you can copy the cache files across with no problems.

If you copy the whole Steam folder across, delete the clientregistry.blob.
