For a while all was fine, played hl2 a bit but not much. Tried it again 2 weeks later and errors popped up so i figured a reinstall was called for. I uninstalled everything, tried to start from scratch then had a steam error whilst it was installing.

Steam.exe (main exception): ERROR: deleted Steam.exe but the file is still there.

Found out info bout it on the steam site, said that ive got some trojan which is stopping it from installing, but ive got an up to date anti-virus and scanned with them anti-adware progs but they havent found a thing (i did notice some random folders on my hdd though, usually with nothing in them or files that = 0 bytes).

My flatmates steam works though, would it be possible to copy his steam folder over, delete whatever file it is that contains the cdkey and login detials, load up steam then enter my login and key? I have been hesitant to try it so far in fear of getting his cd key banned. Could that happen even if i delete the file containing his details?

Not sure if that would work. Theres no file with a cd key in or such like. All the files in steam apps are mostly the same for people with exception to a little customisation (to settings or screenshots etc), its just logging into an account which is the personal bit. Perhaps clientregistry.blob could contain a little info maybe.

But what i really wanted to say was that those empty folders will have things in i think. They may be hidden, so make sure you have your folder options set to 'show all files'. It might be a good idea to do a search for all files and folders of the name of the folder, and some content from within them may turn up hidden in there, or somewhere else on your harddrive. Have fun with your trojan :(
