msn is censoring you!

This wouldn't have happened if people had stopped making viruses...

MSN is cool. Use MSN. <3 Microsoft.

THERE IS ONLY ONE! LONG LIVE MSN! LONG LIVE MICROSOFT! Hail Gates!

Uhm. Why would I be using MSN anyway? IRC is good, fast, free, and non-proprietary.

Assuming I did use MSN, the only reason to care about this in the first place would be natural distrust of Microsoft. GMail also uses automated systems to monitor the words in your emails, but we stopped complaining about that a long time ago.

MSN is a pile of cack. I remember for a while it used to randomly block transfers of .exe's and mp3's between my friends and I, saying they were 'dangerous' (yes, even the mp3's). This is easily worked around by changing the extension but it's an obvious attempt to scaremonger and screw over inexperienced users. Maybe it still does this, but I wouldn't know since I use File Transfer Plus. Even when MSN does arbitrarily decide to let you transfer a 'dangerous' file it rapes your bandwidth utterly. And there's no resume feature. What a piece of drek. I wouldn't be using it at all if idiot friends of mine hadn't made the switch over.

If you .zip the files it dosen't say they're dangerous.

Even if you call them "Uber .zip of ****ing doom"

Zipping up a 1Mb file is a waste of time better spent swearing at midgets. Shouldn't have to do it. I don't like to feel as if I'm being made to jump through hoops by a program I'm using for convenience. 'PLEASE SIR CAN I SEND THIS FILE SIR I SWEAR IT'S NOT DANGEROUS NO OKAY THEN SORRY MR SIR.' Infuriating.

You are a very lazy person if you can't zip a 1mb file...
They block things like .exe's so less experienced users aren't at risk from viruses and such... Yes! There are less experienced users on the internet then maybe you and I. And I'd rather know my computer is safe when a family member uses MSN.

What is the POINT of zipping a 1Mb file? Especially if it's a small .exe install file which is basically a zip file anyway and wont compress any further. There'll be no difference to the transfer time (which is also almost always abysmal through MSN). Exactly how much safer are you when the same family member you don't trust can get the same ohnoesdeadlyvirus.exe sent to them in a zip? No safer? That's right.

Don't tell me I'm lazy. I just don't want to be treated like an idiot - which is exactly what is happening when MSN waits for a bloody transfer to complete (in the case of mp3's) before refusing to open it and vanishing the file because it is 'dangerous'. Sorry if I badmouthed your precious IM prog. I might be forced to use MSN since all my friends can't be bothered to use anything else, but I'll be ****ed if I pay it lip service.

The point is to bypass the MSN filter. If you don't want to zip, just change it or use another ftp service.
The random slow transfers soetimes piss me off, but I really don't sweat the whole deal.
Mostly I didn't know what was going on until reading this thread, but really it isn't worth working up a bother. :/

That's what I do - I use File Transfer Plus (a much recommended plugin for MSNPlus) like I said earlier. Doesn't stop MSN from being an intentionally crippled pile of wank.

As for them censoring certain types of URL server-side, that doesn't bother me too much. That kind of thing is par for the course with MSN.

I love this:

And, for the truly paranoid: Since Microsoft are automatically monitoring your conversations, and block certain messages — what prevents them from eavesdropping on your messages, and sending any “suspicious” content off to third parties, such as governments and their agencies?

Since Amazon have your address, what's to stop them coming with a sledgehammer and smashing up your car?

I have your phonenumber Feath, what's to stop me calling you at 3am?

Who in their right mind at MSN would waste their valuable time sifting through some internet clowns shit-for-brains messages?

I would not do it. Not for less than $20 an hour.
