I'm running a Windows XP system with DirectX 8.1. Whenever I try to boot Half-Life 2, two consecutive error messages pop up reading "The MSS DLL files are installed in the the Windows system directory. They must be installed in the application directory." and a third message saying "The instruction at '[string of characters]' referenced memory at '[string of characters]'. The memory could not be 'read'." Also, after this happens, Steam Update News pops up, which would suggest that Steam is causing problems as a background program, but this still happens after running a clean XP boot. On top of that, before Half-Life loads, Steam says that my graphics driver is out of date, even though I have dowloaded the latest one for my ATI Radeon 9200 card. (Yes, I uninstalled the previous driver first, and even ran Driver Cleaner to be safe.) And yes, I'm running Half-Life off of DirectX 8.1.
Obviously there's more than one issue here. Somebody help me, this is driving me insane.
