multiplayer

so it seems this new multiplayer will cost us money, i think this is why valve has been trying to hide all information about multiplayer. this is a big problem to me because as a lowely student i have spent 2 months saving up for hl2 + upgrades and i dont have ANY type of reliable income to pay for this. if anyone from valve is reading this please release it just like the old HL, free multiplayer on player-owned servers and free mods. FREE MODS ARE WHAT KEPT HL1 PLAYERS AROUND FOR SO LONG.

now honestly, would you guys be willing to put up with a few cheaters and the annoyance of downloading new patches from websites, in order to save $120 a year? (assuming multiplay will be 10 bucks a month)

If you buy the game for $50 dollars at a store multiplayer will cost you nothing.

how do you know? i thought there was a rumor going around that multiplayer was going to run us 10 bucks a month because valve is going to treat it like a MMORPG and only let us play on valve servers which can only use steam to find the games. this shit is all so confusing, i wish they oculd just do it like they did with hl1

no, dude. You can buy SP and MP in one box for one flat fee. No monthly payments unless you want to buy the game through a subscription.

If there's anything BAD about Valve's SKU scheme is that it is obviously confusing users. Multiplayer is free if you buy the full version.

So you will go to Walmart/EB and see 3 boxes:

Single Player only probably ~ $35
Full Game with FREE, No Monthly fee MP ~$50
Collector's Pack with Valve tie clip with FREE, No Monthly fee MP ~ $65

OR you can hop on steam and

Rent the full game and all future games and expansion packs from Valve for 9.95 a month (which, also includes multiplayer).

If you buy the full game in a one time shot (just yer normal $50 bucks for a game), you will not have to pay for multiplayer. You will have to pay $50 for TF2 when it comes out, and $50 for CS:CZ when it comes out also.

The only bonus w/ 9.95 a month is that you pay nothing more for the new games coming out. That's it.

I hope they show us wtf the MP is before the game hits shelves though, I want to know what im paying for.

It reminds me of that game we played in 1st grade with the mystery box and the secret item inside that we got to keep if we guessed what it was. I would never fork out cash for the mystery box unless i knew i wanted what was inside of it.

Even if the mp is standard DM, then the mods would still be worth the extra cash.

Amen to that. This MP silence borders on the bizarre.

yes...I was kinda wondering if we'd see multiplayer at all before it hit shelves...now with these kind of options Valve sort of needs to reveal what multiplayers is a little time before the release.

NO, these rumours, started here on this board are creating the problem, too many morons and not enough people who read and understand english very well !!

/rant

and just to clarify
you can buy hl2 on steam, no extra charges
you can buy hl2 in the shops, no extra charges
you can NOT buy hl2 anywhere, and pay a subscription and get all valve products

I do believe that part of the reason for Valve's hush-hush policy on multiplayer is because of the payment methods, but I also believe that its going to set a new standard for fps multiplayer. No, I do not have proof to back this up, but if you think about it, any company that creates something original and innovative wants to unveil it in all its glory for the consumer, so they can try it out first hand, instead of just seeing videos of someone playing. Yes, this is contrary to the E3 vids, but I believe Valve knows that the multiplayer they've designed will blow away everything thats come before it, and are confident that word of mouth will largely contribute to its popularity. Can we say, perhaps, aliens vs humans? Sure, this has been done before, but imagine the possibilities with Source. Physics rock!!!

The probable reason no MP has been announced yet is because it doesn't exist in any other form other then plain DM. This is the 2 sku's that will be released at the end of the month, SP only and SP w/ DM.. expect to see the full version of HL2 with the more anticipated mods to be delayed til TF 2 and CS 2 are ready to go retail. Then you will see HL2 bonus pack and Steam subscription service.

You've got a good point there, I admit. After all, we've heard of TF2 since way back when the original HL shipped. If its taken them this long to develop it, we can all assume that its been well worth the wait. I do hope that Half-Life 2 has cool DM, though. I can't see how it won't with the physics engine and what not. My weapon of choice would of course be the Manipulator Gun, with a nice hefty radiator hovering mere inches from its gravitational field.

Yes, I've heard some strange rumors that lead me to think the delay confusion is all about multiplayer. I think 'HL2 Deathmatch in Sept, CS2 in November' is a pretty fesible possibility. Perhaps Valve is fighting with Vivendi about whether to release HL2 in Sept with just DM, or to wait until Nov and package it with something better.

Well these forums are really all they have in their lives. Without a normal person's worries (i.e. paying bills, working full time, etc), they can easily create distress out of rather inconsequential ones. I admit, I am no different. I've been clicking the refresh button on the general discussion page like crazy for the past week or so, hoping for any fresh news tidbit to come down the rumor pipeline.
