...not that muscle.
I was just wondering if anyone knew how long it takes for muscles to lose their size.
Here's my situation, I've been working out for 6 weeks now and I have 2 inches of muscle on my chest and my abs are looking pretty good aswell. I want to take a rest for a while, but I don't know if my muscle size will deteriate. Say I take a week off, how much, if any muscle can I expect to lose?
Has anyone else done this before?
Because losing some muscle size after all that hard work would suck...

Your muscles should be fine if you just take a week off, infact a lot of people advise you that when you do heavy lifting every week for more then a few days, every 15th week or so, to take a week off.

Also, if you take anything longer off and your muscles do lose their size, when you get back into weight training, the muscles will go back to full size far quicker then doing it from scratch, it is called muscle memory.

Thanks a lot razor  I'm new to this weights thing and didn't really know much about the subject.
And I recommend everyone try weights for a week, you'll be amazed by the results, that's how I got hooked!
Thanks again :)

yeah i took 2 weeks off my gym, and i didnt lose any :D.

so dont worry about it :D

I agree with your second post :)

Yeah, I was lucky, I didn't loose any strength when I didn't go to the gym for a few weeks :D

1 rep max still 70kg though ;(

I've hardly lost any size, although I don't look so toned anymore, and I've been off the gym for two years (I really REALLY want to go back, but I'm living so far away from it this year - yep, I'm lazy)
I think I could build myself up to my previous standard in a couple of months though. Hopefully I will be able to start going regularly again before 2005 is over.

BEHOLD: This is one of the rare occations you will hear of people hanging out at a forum dedicated to a video game, talk about keeping themself good looking. :P

How many weights or press ups, excercises of the upper body should you do, to be healthy? i dont want huge muscles but i want to feel good about myself, (and lose my beer belly :p). so anyone got any tips?

The best thing to do is to join a gym and talk to the trainers there.

I work out each body part once a week, but going really, really heavy on each part. You need to give your muscles time repair themselves after workouts, if you go really heavy on a workout, it can take around 5 - 7 days to repair themselves to being fully functional. Also, getting rid of your belly will require you eating healthier, eating less and exercising more, you can't just carry on eating junkfood and drinking beer and expect exercise to be the magic fix for it. It will also take time, once you reach the point where you are happy with yourself though, it will be something you will be proud of accomplishing.

i re-joined a gym and am now goin 3 times a week for at least an hour and maybe over an hour and a half

Annoying though how much strength i lost (also managed to become very sick after i stopped excercising a while back so that didnt help any)...Finding it hard to put on weight which also means harder to build up muscle but i shall work at it and see.......

There are some routines where you basically work like a dog for 2 weeks followed by a 2 week break where you basically do no physical activity whatsoever. I have never done it but apparently it works really well for some people and its mostly because of that 2 week break that gives them an edge.

I've been working out for 15 years. sometimes I get my best gains if I just rest a week.

Normally though, you want to keep at it, be sure not to work out the same muscles 2 days in a row.

Don't take too much time off, getting sick or taking a break you will lose muscle faster than you would think

If you ever decide to quit working out, you will need to do some form of weight training (like once a week or something) to maintain your muscles

The human body is efficient.

If you are using your muscles it will make them stronger.

If you are not using your muscles, your body sees no reason to keep feeding them, thats wastefull. and they will shrink!

me doesnt go to the jym or anything
cuz i gots teh too much homework :(:(:(
private school makes you weak...
i only have muscles from testosterone :D

here some tips everyone should know

1. if ur bulking, do high weights and low reps.

2. if you want definition, do lots of reps at a low weight or cardio (treadmill, stairclimber, etc.)

3.If you are bulking, make sure your muscles have time to rebuild after working out. dont work out the same muscles every day, cept abs maybe.

4. Drink lots of water! staying hydrating can help you put up more in your workout

As long as your not taking creatine or anything, youll keep the muscles and weight for a while. Also, i find 1 hour workouts 4 times a week is sufficient to maintain a healthy physique. i really need to go back to the gym because i havent been at all recently. I used to have a strict schedule of when i would go, but then i got lazy with it.

well i used to go to the gym 3-4 times a week right after basketball practice, until i broke my collar in the beginning of the 3rd quarter of my first game! that was december 7th, and i was just cleared to play a few weeks ago. though i have not been to the gym for about 2 months, i have been able to do small excercises and ab workouts. i plan on working out alot after basketball is over (we have a chance to go far in playoffs). right after basketball is over i start tennis, which i will go work out after tennis practice.
its been 2 months since last workout, but basketball practice now is keeping me in shape, and im sure that when i return my muscles wont take that long to get back to the condition they were previous to my accident

what's the point of spending so much time to have big muscles? Personally I think gym monkeys look rather ridiculous, especially the guys that have to walk with their arms sticking out because their biceps are too big to let them hang normally at their sides. Usually they have little chicken legs too which only adds to the ridiculousness.

Please don't judge me like that.
Maybe it's because I want to look good and feel good about myself. How do you know you won't enjoy working out unless you've tried it?
Unlike running of jogging, results from weights occur pretty quickly. Why don't you try it for a week? What have you got to lose?

I do work out, but not to the point of obsession. And I work out to compete and to row faster. Muscle bulk is extra weight and not necessarily any stronger than smaller denser slow twitch muscle. What I'm saying is that trying to have a huge chest for the sake of having a huge chest is silly, and personally I don't think it makes guys "look good".

You stick to your routine, and I'll stick to mine.
No problems there?
I do not row, I ride motorbikes, so being heavier not only lets the motorbike dig into the ground and thus have more traction, but if I fall down I'll be able to lift the bike up a lot easier (this bike of mine is HEAVY).
But I guess you're right, people work out for different reasons and your routine is different to mine for that very reason.

i dont think he was saying he lifts for obsession, dan. im sure he was just saying how enjoys to stay fit, and how he found a new hobby.

I took two weeks off once and I was stronger when I came back.

I may make a poll to find out how many forum goer's lift weights. Would anyone else feel like sharing some of their secrets to success aswell?

I don't really weight life anymore. I work more on my cardio and endurance more than anything else. I do lift every now and then to keep me strong.

I ran for 2 km every day....and I work out on CSS :p

btw, what's with the up-and-down avatar thing? :O

unofficial upside down week
I used to run, but I felt it was too high impact, my legs were killing me.

Yes, they'll go down. Take it easy on yourself tho, cause you'll be bashing your head on the wall when you pull/rip a muscle really bad and you're out for a minimum of three weeks.

Weight lifting is too much effort, just become the metal man!

One time I didn't go to the gym for about 2-3 weeks. When I went back, I noticed I couldn't lift as much as before. But the next time, I was back to where I was before. So yes you will lose some strength, but it comes back quickly.

Lots of good wholesome food and protein and a sexy fitness instructor at the local gym, that is what keeps me going :P.
