Must be online to play HL2:Ep One single player?

Must one really be online (logged into Steam) to play? I installed on a laptop to play over the holidays and wa shighly annoyed that I had to shlep the laptop over to my inlaws (non-wireless)router each night.

Have I installed or configured incorrectly or is this really a constraint?

You have to log on once, yes, but after that you can usually activate Offline Mode.

Even though it's up-to-date, you have to be online to get achievements.

There are no Achievements for PC AFAIK.
