Greetings all,
Several years ago when I lived New Zealand, I would often spend the weekend at my grandma's place. They lived on a 125 acre farm. At an early age I learned how to drive a tractor so I could help out & feed the animals early every morning. When I turned 12, my grandma taught me how to ride a dirt bike. Just picture a 65 year old lady booking around on a dirt bike. God I wish I had pictures.. Well they had a 90cc "Farm Bike" that they used to get around on the farm. When I was shown the bike, it was not in working order. I remember like it was only yesterday when I first saw it in the barn under a tarp. It was around 6:00am on a Saturday morning. I remember the bike was a faded Red with a "bananna" seat. Every weekend for 3 months I worked on that bike. Even though I had never driven a dirt bike, let alone worked on one, my hands just seemed to know what they were doing. It had 2 big fat tires like an ATV's with massive knobs for treds.
Which finally brings me to the game that is the subject of todays review.
MX vs. ATV Unleashed
This game is extremely addicting. A friend from another forum I post at sent me this game because he knew I liked dirt bike themed games. Everything about it is fun. From the challenging courses to the many different types of races that are available. The game comes with a map editor so that you can make your own tracks if the HUGE selection of maps that comes with the game have been mastered.
There is even some humor thrown in. Well I find it quite funny anyways when one of the other AI riders (which do a very good job in-game) doesn't make a jump right & so you see him go flying off in the wrong direction, such as into the trees or into the side of buildings or other static objects. Take a jump to fast & if you happen to land on another rider, you are treated to that rider screaming as you make him wipe out & go flying. Factor in that this game has rag-doll & well you get the picture. Of course you have to pay attention as well since the other riders can land on you as well and can bump you while riding, causing you to eat dirt.
The game offers a wide range of game types, such as Freestyle, Stunts, Hill climbing, Follow the leader & many more, not to mention several different types of actual races themselves. There is also the ability to upgrade your bike by unlocking parts.
The visuals won't win any awards for being next Gen, but that does not mean that they are not any good. Quite the opposite really. The tracks & various maps look very nice. The audio itself is good, but the actual sound of your bike is poor. Sounds like the exact same engine audio that was used in Motorcross Madness 2. All the other sounds are well done. The controls are straight forward & easy to use.
The game comes with a decent Multi-player, that lets you join other online bikers as well to compete as well as the option of playing it over a LAN.
This is a very fun game. I highly recommend it.
Final Score 3.5/5
