Your parents must be into graphic design or something for you to have a copy of photoshop at age 12 ;). Not bad for your first. I'd recommend checking out some basic photoshop tutorials rather than just diving in. You miss a lot of important stuff if you just fiddle around for a while.

Well, fiddling with the program does help with getting use with the interface and all, which is crucially important. Tutorials make you follow a set route of instructions which really limits you to any familiarisation apart from the usual "do this, and that, click here, and there". Tutorials are very important in developing skills. I would encourage you to have a balanced dosage of both. Read up on some tutorials, follow it, then restart and mess around with the features and tools to come up with new stuff.

Actually the younger you are the more easily it is to learn something new. I would be impressed if you were like 50 and it was you're first time.

i ran out of room, and i would have to make it bigger than my monitor if i wanted to do that

one thing many people who use photoshop never learn is that they dont need photoshop to do what they want to do. there are other paint programs out there that are less expensive if not free, and can do many things.

your pic for example, could be done in ms paint. this isn't meant to offend you, but photoshop is for learned graphics artists that need the advanced features photoshop provides. paint shop pro would be more than enough for most regular computer users. or one of my favorites: the gimp

http://www.gimp.org/

which is freeware, so you wouldn't have to let piracy weigh on your conscience.
