I don't think its the same as the audio stuttering or memory errors, but I'll post anyways in case it helps someone.
I was having a problem where after 5-10 minutes of play, the game would freeze and the audio would be looping. It happened at random points but seemed like when a new enemy appeared or explosion for the first time. After freezing, it would kick me to the desktop and I would get an ATI error that the VPU failed and was switching to software rendering mode.
Specs:
AMD2500XP
512MB PC3200
Abit NF7-S
ATI 9800XT w/4.12 drivers
SB Live 5.1
Windows XP SP2
HL2 downloaded from Steam
I did a few things at the same time, so here they are:
1. Took the SB Live card out of the machine and went back to onboard sound. (The SB card was in there originally because of problems with my TV tuner).
2. Downloaded latest Nforce drivers.
3. Added -heapsize 256000 to launch options
4. Changed the "mixahead" option in the config file to 0.4
I'm pretty sure that my Creative card was the problem, as even in Steam support they said they have problems with SB cards and certain PCI slots. So try that and good luck.
