I recently reinstalled Win XP on my computer, loaded the newest drivers for everything I could find (Cat 4.4, Dx9.0b etc) and now whenever I do something that involves mildly uses the computers resources, It just restarts. Most of the time it's when I have many apps open, run a virus scan and it 100% happens when I play games. I cant figure out what I've done wrong!

My Specs:
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro AiW
512 DDR PC3200
AC97 Audio (intergrated)
Catalyst 4.4 (yes, I did try most of the previous drivers, 3.6-4.4)
DirectX 9.0b

Can anyone help me? The games I mostly play are GTA3, Simcity 4, BF:V, and CS (but CS never works anyway, screw you Steam!). So far none of the EA games have ever really worked stabely on my system, even 4 months ago.

no Internet = .....no games :( (atleast multiplayer)

Have you tested your memory lately? Sometimes it just goes bad for no apparent reason and the computer randomly restarts. If not... sucks to your asmar!

I don’t think its spyware, as I have run Adaware and Spybot. Idk if it’s a virus, cause it always restarts halfway through a virus scan. Oh, and Windows update wont work ;(

Try

1) Taking a can of compressed air and clean out the inside of your computer, the dust may cause your CPU to overheat.
2) Check all of the power connections in your computer. Also try plugging your computer into another surge protector or outlet.
3) Could be your PSU is going bad or your computer is trying to draw too much energy from it. Have installed anything new recently?
4) Windows XP itself could've had a corrupt installation. Try reformating and reinstalling windows.
5) If one through four fail, find a golf club and take out your agression on the computer.

I'll try your suggestions. I personally think that its either overheating or the Power supply. I have 230V supply, but then I added the 9600 AiW. Could that be it?

Oh and sometimes after the restart I get one of those 'Serious Error" Win error reports.

I've gotten this problem before. The cause was the memory speed was set too high, and for some reason it was causing the shutdowns. It was at 166 and i set it down to 133, and the problem was solved. Try that and see what happens

:) Sometimes when I choose to "shut down" my PC restarts.

I already backed it all up on DVD's :)

FINAL SOLUTION FOR RESTARTING PROBLEMS - get a grenade. open your comp. put the gren inside. take off the safety. wait 30 secs (with minimal 30 mt distance)

It will never restart again.

but he wants it to stop restarting, not stop booting ;)

Yes, if I had $2000+ american dollars I would get an alienware. I sometimes go to there website and pretend I have $15,000 to blow and i max all the customizable options out. If only....:)
