my computer wont turn off or on via the power button! help!

I bought this monitor about 1 month ago...it's an NEC FE991-SB. The monitor is on...but when i push the power button..it wont turn off! Im afriad if i turn it off it wont turn back on..What could be the problem? Could the switch be bad? I am frustrated because i do not have a back-up monitor capable of running the resolutions that i can run with this monitor. Someone please help..

Maybe the switch is broken. If it's past return/warantee, unplug it, crack it open and see if it's just a bit of plastic to glue.

If you do open it, make sure not to touch any of the components or circuit boards near the base of the tube. Monitors are high-voltage components, and can be dangerous. The on-off switch should be on a seperate PCB near the front, or be a free-standing thing that's glued or screwed on.

Yeah, steer clear from any capacitor-looking objects, lol. I learned that lesson multiple times from cameras. A monitor however is not quite of the same caliber.
