I get the shittiest performance ever on my PC. (p4 2.6ghz radeon 9800 pro 128mb (256 architecture) 512mb ddr 2700 ram)

average fps 20

sometimes I play games with everything max, 1280x1024 4xaa, 8xaf with a server of 32 people, and my fps is around 90 constant.

other times (mostly) I get 10-20fps.

and this whole morning I got 5-10fps.
yah :(
I have no viruses (scan daily with symantec)
no spyware (daily scan with adaware)
I defragged my HD last night (so it isnt that)
I have my latest mobo drivers, ati 4.10s, soundcard etc.

its just random.
the only thing I can think of is I need to format my HD. (80gb seagate barracuda)
and if that's not it.... I have no idea.

time to buy new ram/mobo/cpu I guess.

or should I go with an x800 pro (don't really want to, because it's not that impressive.... I would rather wait for next gen cards in feb)

also, no matter if I have every option on low, no aa, no af, host my own server (no people), am in dx level 7 and 640x480.. I CANNOT increase my fps... it stays the same (basically) as it is with everything maxed... kinda pointless.

well then there is obviously some sort of problem there.. umm how do other games run (eg doom 3, far cry ect) try setting it to performance in ati control panel.. and maybe formatting your hd would be good idea too

other games run great, it's only CS:S I have problems with.

First guess

1) Download the 4.10 ATI drivers again
2) Download Driver Cleaner
3) uninstall your graphic card drivers
4) restart in safe mode
5) run Driver Cleaner
6) Install your 4.10 Cats

Bring down your AA as well, this maybe making your situation even worse. If you must have AA, only use 2x instead of 4x. Especially since you are using a slightly higher than normal resolution.

Also, do you get the same problem with the Valve Stress Test, or is this only a CS:S thing?

I wouldn't suggest you buying an X800 Pro / 6800 GT because you don't really need it. Your setup should be working perfectly. If you do want to upgrade something, some more RAM would be nice.

I wouldn't get a X800 with that cpu and mobo m8.

A new cpu/mobo/ram bundle would work wonders.

I'm using an cheap overclocked Barton (at 2.5 gigs) 1 gig of pc3200 and a 9800 pro. That gives a score of 104 in the stress test (no AA, 2*AF, 1024*768, everything on high) , about 50-70 during play.

Maybe try and pick up a cheap A64 - there's plenty about at the mo.

Yeah like blah blah blah mentioned, make sure previous drivers were un-installed.

I would purchase a new cpu, mobo and ram. Uninstalling the videocard drivers completely before installing new ones is always important for us ATI-lovers.

I always use driver cleaner, and install in safe mode :) (Im a www.rage3d.com forumite as well)

as I said before, adjusting my graphical settings has no effect. (no matter the resolution, aa, af, gfx settings)

In stress test I get 78fps average. (so no the stress test is fine)

Im not really one for AMD... the only board I ever had from AMD, burned out within two weeks :/ .

but if I got an AMD A64, which one should I get?

@ sublidieminal + Ecthe|ioN: Yup I always do....

is a 3.2 really that much more powerful than my 2.6ghz though?

could you guys recommend a couple CPUS/mobos?

Wipe your hard drives. 60% of the time, it works every time.

yeah only problem is there is a ton of stuff I want to backup first... so I need to buy DVDs/transfer to my other PC...
but I really should get on that.

Get a 6800 ULTRA :D Far Cry with SM3 and HDR is awesome, and i'm sure other games will use it also.

How much do you have to spend?

New cpu/mob/ram cudl end up costing quite a bit.

You guys install video drivers in safe mode.. was I reading that right? why? :rolling:

$550 (USD), so it would either be the mobo/cpu/ram or the x800 platinum.

It really isn't worth geting a X800 PT if you haven't the components to support it.

My mate has a 6800 gt, unfortunately the rest of his pc sux :/ He gets less fps then my 9800 pro even tho his gfx card kicks its ass.

You guys are idiots. He doesn't need a new computer, it is really fine. Now, we just have to find the problem!

First, put the settings on 4xAF, and 2xAA and come back with results.

well it was my suggestion, Im upgrading regardless.. I was just asking people's opinions.

I tried 4xAF and 2xAA at 1024x768.. 20fps.

I think I merely need to format.

but regardless of what it is, I do intend to purchase more hardware.

It seems like there's some internal conflicts with your rig instead of hardware issues, so I bet a cleaned harddrive would do wonders. But when you put your mind to upgrading, there's no stopping you I guess (If you're like me). Upgrading is fun :) Go for it.
