:frown: I was playing HL2 (3rd time around) then I bought Area 51 and played it. When I went back to HL2 it wouldn't start up. It will load right past the guy with the valve in his eye then a little window comes on and says
< Failed to set video mode - resetting to defaults > I then L/C OK then it loads a little past the guy again, then the little window says
< Failed to set video mode - falling back to safe mode > I then L/C OK then it loads again past the guy then says < Failed to set video mode this game has a minimum requirment Direct X 7.0 compatible hardware > I then L/C OK and the game goes off. I down loaded DirectX 9 and reloaded it. I uninstalled the video drivers and reinstalled them again. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled it again.I then went online and did all update stuff and the same thing is still happening. Can anyone help me out on this.

I have the same problem. It occured after I updated my Nivida drivers to the latest version (77.72). Now, I would normally just roll-back to an older driver, but that gives me alot of problems with several other games. It seems odd that HL2 doesn't seem to support the latest drivers. Or is it just me?

I tried re-installing HL2, but the problem came back. I have the latest Direct X, and a fresh install of XP last week.

Any fix for this?

Same problem here.

When I first installed the game and got everything updated and ready to play, a window popped up saying that my video drivers were out of date, so I updated them with the newest ones from nVidia's site and that's when I encountered the error messages posted above.

At first I thought it was my graphics card, since I know the GeForce 5200FX is a pretty crappy card. So I borrowed my friend's old BFG GeForce 5700LE and after I first installed it, the game ran fine for about 4 hours and much fun was had.

But now that I've brought my computer back to my house and set it all back up again, I'm getting the messages again, saying the game requires a DirectX card of 7.0 or greater. I've done all the same as the above poster, short or reinstalling XP, and thus far nothing works.

After all the problems I've had with nVidia's cards and drivers lately, I think I'm going to make the switch to ATI when I purchase a new card next week. This is ridiculous.

Any help?
