I was using my PC at home....then it just goes black...I turn it on....goes black again....turn it on and go into the BIOS to check everything and what do i see....

CPU TEMP = 98 Degrees Celsius.....

Before It turned off I could see that the fan inside was not even blowing, and after removing the heattsink, saw that whatever it is that is between the heatsink and cpu...was FUSED to the cpu....What would cause the fan to stop working so suddenly? Upon taking it out, there was a good amount of dust in it, but not THAT much.....

So obviously I need a new processor and heatsink/fan, but would that much heat ruin my motherboard? The slot where the CPU goes seems fine...

Anyway, im pissed obviously and without a home computer so any help would be super.

Yes the heat could damage the mainboard.

If it was the stock fan, can't you use the warrenty to get a new one?

let the processor cool,if you can turn on your pc without it shutting it off then it will work. The computer shutting down like that is a fail-safe system for cpus that are overheating so they wont get to the point of killing it. the only reason that the heatsink and cpu would be fused together is because of the thermal paste is cooled down to where its not liquidy. yes and if you have a warranty i highly recommend you use it for the heatsink and the processor anyways.

I got the system from BuyXG, a company in california, and I belive the warranty was only good for 1 year.

Assuming I need a new processor, would this be a wise choice?

Processor

Also, any ideas yet as to what could of ceased the fan from working?

You can't, you have a socket 939 mainboard, you can't put AM2 socket cpus in there. The best option would be the x2 4600.

I cant find any 939 4600 on newegg...all AM2's, are they not making them anymore or what...

you're out of luck, AMD discontinued them last year ..unless you can find a used one you wont find a retail version ...you may be able to find a 939 opteron or an fx chip but they're also hard to find as they've been long discontinued

use it as an excuse to upgrade to something current ...ya I know, it means new mobo + new ram (you have DDR ..DDR is obsolete) ..but your mobo may be fried as well

oh and if I were you I'd remove the cpu and see if it's damaged before restarting ..if it is it may further screw your mobo

if you wait till end of july I'll sell you my amd x2 4200 :)

Well, i tried it again, its def. just a shitty fan. The PC starts to boot to windows...so I think my chip is fine....im going to go buy a new fan....ill let you know how it goes...

thanks fellas

At least it's just the fan. That's great.

If you do end up having to replace the CPU there are Dual Core socket 939 chips on newegg still. Mostly Opteron's (1MB L2 cache) as the Athlon 64 X2's (512KB L2 cache) are gone. They are the same thing although go through more testing and have more L2 cache vs the Athlon's since they are targeted toward the workstation/server markets.

Example
2.4Ghz Opteron
Would be the same as the X2 4600+ besides the extra L2 cache.

Haha tyguy, gawd I hate that feeling... Glad it's worked out for ya :)

Do all of the above and replace HSF your CPU is probably OK.

Good Luck.

:)

I replaced the fan + heat sink with a X Wind Cooling fan as well as replacing the thermal grease and its working great!

Couldn't be happier I don't have to shell out money to replace the cpu...

Thanks guys

I remember back in the day the AMD thunderbirds had a really big problem with the heatsink simply falling off the board. We had 2 CPUs fry this way, it was fun :upstare:.

Glad that didn't happen in your case, be sure to check up on that fan once in a while to make absolutely sure it is running like its supposed to and there isn't too much dust in there. It sounds like your mobo has temp sensors on it, I can't remember the name of the simple program I used to take readings from those sensors but the following program got decent reviews, though I can't vouch for it:

I dont call that fun; I once droped a CPU on the floor and I went "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK", my wife and kids charged downstairs thinking; that I may broke a hip. Scare the living daylight out of them.

Luckily, the basement is also carpeted in my house so, there was no damage done to the chip. The little bent pins (maybe two or three) straighten them with a finger nail. Wow! was that a scary time? it was a FX-57 system I was building for client of mine, couple of years ago; when they're like "$400-500?"
There was noway I would install that chip; if too many pins were bent; then it could be chip and MB to buy.

When I bend pins on those things before installing, I call up teh company and say they gave me a broken processor!

Pff, the crap CPU's they do nowadays, I remember my Pentium 75 used to work fine even when the fan stopped working. But I usually just gave it a spin with my finger to start it up, just in case (it stopped spinning upon boot one day and needed that). :D

Speedfan, coretemp and everest. Those are the most used programs to check temps.

I have a question...most computers have a thermostat inside that detects heat and if it gets to hot, shuts down the computer....what happened to yours?

It worked and shut it down. That's why his cpu is still working.
