My first "official" map

Well I have been around these fourms for about a year or so, trying to get a decent grasp on maping. Recently I decided I would try and somewhat of a "releasable" map. If any of you have ever played Socom II you would recognize this map. I know that most of you are not all for remaping but since im not a very creative person I decided to take a map i enjoyed it and map it source style. Its called Desert Glory, I plan on releasing 2 versons of this. One will be for Css, it will be a hostage rescue map since thats what it was in the origional. The other will be a Dod:s verson, since it is a little small compared to most of them I am setting up the control points strategicly and making it a little more difficult to capture the flags. Heres some pics in the late stages of development in the Dod:s version.

I know the picture arn't that great but it give the "jist" (sp?) of it.

Don't have DOD:S but, my god that map looks nice!
 
Looks reasonably good, although the pictures don't show the scale very well. Take some pics from ground level to give us an impression of the scale and visibility of the key areas coming from the Allied and Axis ends of the map.
 
Thanks, the scaling i could admit could have been done a little bit better, if anything becomes a problem during play testing i will make revisions.

BTW: this map is in HDR just puttin that out there, also if anybody knows how to stop the sand from looking like somebody spilled a super tanker of turtle wax in the middle of the desert, please let me know, there ARE cubemaps already. (most visible in the last pic)
 
Lol, I see what you mean about the Sand. No idea on how to fix it though.
 
Yeah it wouldnt be so bad except some brushes are doing it and some arnt.
 
Place a cubemap high in the sky and point it to be applied to the displacement brushes.
 
i recommend using a different material for the sand. it looks shiny because it's meant to be wet tidal sand for a coastline, and you want dry desert sand i presume. and those shiny pebbles look way out of place

otherwise looks nice

Well its not the first map ive ever created. However it is the first map i have created with intentions to release as a multiplayer map. I have never completed a playable map that served any purpose.
 
before you you release, you might want to make it so people cant spawn kill. thats a big pet peeve for dod:S
 
I have considered that but I will have to work on a decent way to implement that without cutting out some of the playing space.
 
yeah i most def agree... if you notice on other maps you usually have to jump over a one-way sand bag barier or something to get out of spawn... try something like that
 
Doing that would cut out some of the playable space I will try and implement somthing like that though, i would have to completely rework the axis spawn, as if i did it there it would make parts of the map awkward to get to.

you could always make a new material using existing textures. same texture(s), modified shader
 
Yeah, that's a good idea. Just copy/rename the .vmt for the sand that you're using, but reduce the tint levels.
 
I found one that seems to look alright, and its not glossy. Ill edit with a screenie later.
 
Im happy to announce that the DOD:S version of Desert Glory is near release.

Here are some screenies of the spawn exits. The first 2 are of the Allies exits and the 3rd picture is of the Axis exit. The last picture is an overview of the map with the new sand texture and blend.

Well, I've got a solid build for DOD:S completed, I'm looking for a few experienced mapers with DOD:S to playtest the map with me, I'd hope that they could spot out any errors and point me in the right direction to correcting them. Also, I have not played the map with anyone else as of yet, I'm hoping to get a test server running sometime tomorrow (tuesday) in the pm possibly from 4 to 8. PM me if you are interested, I'll try and get back to you.
 
<hint: post in the DoD forum> or ask Ennui to give you names of HL2.net DoD players who'd make decent testers.
 
It's definately a good looking map, but I did just realized it's from SOCOM which means you did a good job recreating it although it's not your level design.

You might want to invest some time in making the ground look more natural, the grass bits on the displacements doesn't quite look right. In fact it looks more like the coast of city 17 than a desert. Custom textures would work really well for this if you want that desert feel.
 
Yeah, the DOD forum is basicly a barren wasteland though. I will post there also. How would I go about getting in touch with Ennui?
@ Ben I have no idea how to do custom textures, they probably would look worse then the ones I'm using now.
 
PM. The only reason I suggest Ennui is because I know he's a DoD fanboi who posts whenever DoD gets update and because his advice should prove reliable. He might not have the time nor the inclination to test this out himself, but he should at least be able to point you in the right direction of a few names that would give decent feedback.
 
looks pretty good so far, just make sure it's balanced. :X
 
I hope you fix the Wet-Sand-In-The-Middle-Of-The-Desert problem there. :p

But hey, the map looks like sex, great work.
 
:O Reviving a somewhat ancient thread. Hopefully soon I'll get to blow the dust off of this .vmf and try and get it up for playtesting when I get my server soon. PM me if any of you are interested in helping me playtest. I'm expecting to have the server in about a week.
 
I'd be interested in seeing a css version of this. Never really got into wwI/II games.

I was thinking of doing a CSS version also. Hey Immortal did you get my PM with the email and AIM ?
 
Yup. Sent out email to everyone. Seems things will have to be postponed until valve fixes everything the update broke.

Time? I am one of those foreign europeans so my time always is a bit skewed when it comes to this. I live in the GMT + 1 (paris etc) timezone.
 
I dont know if you are still doing this map, but ill help out if you need more playtesters. Although i never playtested before... theres no time like the present to start. PM me if you still want to do it.
 
Unfortunately, my mobo fried last week just before I went on vacation. So the playtesting will be delayed two weeks at most, so if you guys will still be interested please let me know.
 
I know I know, ancient thread AGAIN. This time I'm serious, playtesting will start later on tonight and the server will be up for as long as I want it to be. Please PM me if your interested at all. There is no commitment involved.
