My girl... (Skin tones continued, kinda)

I've been painting this girl for two (or is it three) days now, and I've been taking pics along the way to show you how I've been doing it.

I'd like crits on the most recent pic, because I consider it a work in progress so far. If you think my way of working seems incredibly stupid and slow (or should be changed for some other reason), please tell me that too.
I might continue and do a fullbody pic eventually..
But first, the face!

I have one layer for the background, one layer for the girl's colors, and one layer for black lines (i need to know where to put my colors, but lots of people paint without the lines). I've got some comparison pics, for with and without the black lines.. My goal is to be able to paint without the lines... (I think they're too "Comicy").

All done in photoshop 7.0, using my oh-so-lovely Graphire 3...

First I laid down the base colors (with a nice neutral background color), and then I've used red and blu for skin and shadows.
I've used the setting "Soft light" when working with the red and blue, and lots of Airbrush and Smudge for making things smoother.

JK, yeah I know, it's the colors that are my problem. I think my level of drawing correct anatomy is acceptable at the moment, it's when the colors begin the problems start.. :x

I dunno if you're going for the cartoony look or what, but your proportions are way off. I've sketched a rough outline of a face to show you how they should be (its by no means perfect, but its a start).

The nose is too wide thats for definite and it seems like you're trying to move onto areas you shouldnt prematurley before completing other bits.

Try corel painter http://www.corel.com/painter8/ for your work because blending in photshop or whatever you're using seems to be getting you nowhere.

You're colours are too yellow too and you seem to be using colours that are way too overpowering throughout.

I usually draw quite cartoony, that's what I'm trying to move away from.. :hmph:


I can see the nose is a bit too wide... But I could also see some people have noses like that, though. IMHO it doesn't look abnormal or anything, just not photomodel-proportions...
The lips aren't that good either. too big and too red, methinks. I might change them.

I know the eyes might be a slight bit over the middle of her face, which is bad, but I don't see how the overal proportions of the face are that wrong?
I think your proportion sketch was nice, but I don't think that the jaw area looks that good really.
Please tell me how I can improve the proportions then, I don't see it (except what's already mentioned).


Funny you'd mention Corel. I installed it just a few days ago, and I'll be sure to try it out thoroughly.

"Colors too yellow"? Yeah they might be. Check the pics I attached. The one that's not mine is made by a guy named Anry (an artist I like), and check the girl in his. Obviousely his pic is better than mine, but he's a professional. I'm not sure mine is more yellow than his though.


Keep in mind this is the second ever painting where I try for a more realistic look (red/blue-shading etc).

err, well its better than just saying "thats really good" and stuff like everyone else does because here im actually trying to get information as im curios. Just because i put it in 3 words doent mean its spam. I wanted to know what it was, as many people would have who read the name of the image, and i didnt want to say "oh well, i dont care" because i did care and i though it looked like cool concept art and if its concept art im interested in the game. Spam is when the stuff posted is no use to the readers or to the poster, but this post was a use to me.
