okay guys this is my first ever skin and it took around 6hrs including learning, reading tutorials and making some textures to use, i spent most time on the blade as you can tell because the rest is kinda scribbled in quickly. my skinner friend says to use black and white only when skinning metal n stuff as i used greys, burn tool and dodge quite alot, any links to GOOD skinning tutorials and any tips? the first pic is the skin out flat, the second one only had the blade skinned hence dumb colours but you can see detail better, the third is it on the model and finnished, didnt do the handle yet as it looks more complicated and ive been busy. whats your opinion for a first time skinner? :upstare: :D edit: im gonna make a stainless steel cutting edge tommorow so it looks cooler scarier! :borg:

looks good, but very dark (as i know the kbar is). You might wanna make a specular map (or use one of max's) to make it look more metal like.

On the K-Bar I have only the edge of the blade is metal-shiny, the rest is covered with a matte black expoxy.

really? The ones i've seen/played with have black carbon-fiber blades.

I bought this over ten years ago, but it was a real ka-bar, ww2 style. Perhaps there's some variation.

i know what you mean and i plan to add it on today, i tried before but it looked crappy so i left it out.

looks sexy eh. hey sidewinder, im the lead modeler of the mod this is for, and i dont know much about specular maps. as far as i know, they are maps to show where there reflection is and isnt. thats probably completely wrong, so could any one explain to me what they are, or send me in the direction of a good tutorial.

PS. ill have a look at the official ones for Max, but from memory, they're not very good.

Specular maps: "Simulate reflections that occur only in the highlight"

So you paint your specular map in a way that dirt areas that do not reflect light are almost black and those who are very mettalic and reflective are white. However, I think you can put color informations into your specular map but you can't in the Shinniness Map.

hehe, thats kinda what i thought, so i wasnt miles off, i think this calls for a conveniently ( spelling ? ) called 'specular map messing about session' :p
