More specifically, when unmuted it produces sound that I can hear in my headphones, but muted or not, no program can detect my mic.

How do I fix this? Google hasn't been any help. I'm running some Realtek onboard audio hardware (Asus M4A78 Plus motherboard), with what I believe are the newest drivers. This also is a recent issue, my mic worked no problem for a long time with this current mobo and XP install.

You want to edit it's volume in your Recording settings, not your Playback settings.

Keep the playback muted.

Also in the advanced section in the recording settings you want to turn on mic boost.

It could be a lot of things. You can start here: Make sure it's plugged in all the way, and plugged in to the correct port. Could also be a bad wire/bad mic, so maybe wiggle the cord and shit, specifically at the joints (where it goes into the mic, and where the wire goes into the jack.

My mic wasn't working last time I tried to use it (months ago) which left me with a similar problem. It worked last time I used it. (but isn't that always the case)

My mic used to do this but has stopped since I got Windows 7. I haven't even looked at the settings in it. It used to do it only when I had Line In unmuted but somehow it started doing it all the time and I couldn't seem to have it work without that annoying feedback.

I got Audacity to record, but Steam still won't even recognise the existence of my mic :(

I've reinstalled drivers, toggled every setting I could possibly find, what is there left to do?

You are my least favourite of all the Alexes in my life.

Steam is a pile of ass when it comes to detecting sound input.
