I've been using Reason on and off for roughly a year or two, and have, during the tiny periods of time not spent screaming in frustration, managed to create a few tracks. I'd like to see what you think of some of them, especially now as there's been somewhat of a surge in members being into the electronica and ambient genres.

It's all pretty much electronic or ambient with influences from various artists or genres. I've marked the full-fledged finished songs (with proper verse + chorus organisation) with a "*" .

* http://media.putfile.com/you-are-me-2 One of the first properly finished songs I made after learning about organisation and verses/choruses. I was really satisfied when I made it and I still like it. IDM-ish.
* http://media.putfile.com/extacia - Inspired by HL2.
http://media.putfile.com/radioactive1
http://media.putfile.com/radioactive2 - experiment with a chorus for a techno/chemical-ish song, two different versions. They don't differ that much though, just a pad melody that affects the feel of it.
* http://media.putfile.com/deepspace - some kind of futuristic techno/trance-ish thing.
http://media.putfile.com/j00 - test, noisy aphex twin-ish ambient with a beat.
http://music.bands411.com/derelict/music/xiebl_yqgui.m3u - Short ambient loop inspired by the.. short ambient loops.. in Doom 3. I like this one alot.
http://media.putfile.com/diduax - short test, violent and DNB-ish. Maybe something that'd fit in a game boss sequence.
http://media.putfile.com/we-leave-this-moment - aphex twin SAW album-ish.
* http://media.putfile.com/ascent51 - Electro-ish with samples 'n shiznit. Like the effect taking over at about 05:10.
* http://media.putfile.com/jambalaya - Electro/techno-ish test. Average.
* http://media.putfile.com/cliffs-at-sea an attempt at making a chillout track. The stuff in the verse is just annoying, but I really like the chorus pad melody.
* http://media.putfile.com/ocean-of-air2 - another attempt at chillout. This one is reeeaally slow. But I like it alot. Had to reduce the quality to 92kbs because of putfile.
http://media.putfile.com/silent-gaze - Just made this one, a little inspired by the latest BOC album.

Please let me know what you think and maybe I'll upload some more stuff later. :)

Nice. I like the ambient ones. The electronic/techoni-ish songs are kinda too simple I think, but I havent listened all of them yet.

I especially liked the more ambient ones. The ones with actual beats seem akin to a problem I have: I make what sounds like a really cool bit and then have no clue and/or will to develop it further. :( So I've got a lot of "concept" tracks and short pieces. Am I off the mark when I say you have similar issues?
Either way, it's good stuff with potential. I'd certainly like to hear more. :)

I've been using Reason as well for about a year now, previously being an FL user. As of late, I've been churning out tracks fairly rapidly thanks to all the time to kill between uni classes.

Thanks for the comments guys.

No, you're completely correct. It feels exactly like that for me too, I usually rush the last moments of a track when I run out of ideas.

But it usually takes a really long time to create and finish a track, I just lack too much patience to spend more time on an old track.

Yeah, I used to have so many ideas for some of my songs, but I don't usually go back to rework them.

That said, I've kept on to all of my songs, going back to when I was plugging free samples into a tracker with no idea what I was doing. But while the songs were shite in terms of their structure, sound, and editing, there were some good drum bits and melodies. I've actually taken it upon myself to remake the ones that are good enough.
My current hurdle, really, is getting good bass out of the program.

There's some of my stuff if you'd like to give it a listen. It really only starts getting decent at about "Extro Sense" and upwards. The last couple of tracks I made were "Salvin", "Phi", "In Your Breath", and "Stretch" being the most recent one. And for the hell of it I made some old-skool electronica track "The Accomplice" using only ReBirth and a few pads. ("Salvin" is the track I remade)

EDIT: Hmm... for some reason "In Your Breath" has been slowed down dramatically.

Haha, that's some great stuff, really like In Your Breath, "Accomplice" and Gnak Gnat (glitch ftw :D)
I'd like to move towards IDM and glitch (not that I have a clue how to make glitch, maybe ****ing abit in cubase with a drumloop would be fun), since it's such a kickass genre and the melodies are generally very unique. It feels kind of overdone though with all artists on WATMM just recreating Aphex Twin's signature sounds instead of going totally unique like he did back in his days.

I need to get a synth as I'm noticing the limits of just fiddlin' away at a PC keyboard when I'm playing on our piano for practice and coming up with melodies. Got a few ideas that I'd love to record eventually.

Yeah, there was a time when I wanted to sound like the windowlicker himself, but I've sort of given up on that because A) I'd end up sounding like an imitation but without the ingenuity, and B) I wouldn't know where to start.
At this point, I don't quite know what kind of sound I'd be going for any way, so my stuff's kind of all over the place. So I just sort of try my hand at everything (I've got some godawful trance tracks somewhere on this harddrive that I will never let anybody hear) and see what clicks.

What do ya guys use for making these? I have FL Studios but never really go into it...

You are me 2 had a nice feel, but I would tweak the main synth a little if possible.

V nice, love the hl2 inspired one, and the BOC type one

Hmm... I liked the last track. But the beat just seemed too familiar. ;)

I've just uploaded "Shacklecore" to my soundclick page if you want to give that a listen.

BTW if you ever feel interested in doing some sort of collaborative project for kicks, feel free to give me a PM. :)

Try using something else but Reason. Reason makes everything sound the same, and then start making your own samples because if some bastard hears this thinks this could get popular he might just check into the sounds and whoops - then he'll find out that all the sounds you've used have been stolen from this and that and this... It's also a lot more original when using homemade sounds OR you if you really feel like stealing a few samples then make sure no one will be able to hear where it's from. **** it all up and make it sound all different that what it did to begin with...

I disagree. While this may hold true with inexperienced users (you can often identify the maelstrom synth in the hands of a newbie), the same could be said for any program. The trick, as with anything, is finding a way to distinguish yourself. Between Interval does this. Mike Paradinas (µ-ziq) does this. So do Sonic Mayhem, Prodigy, Crystal Method, and plenty of other professional artists.

Of course, I don't condone confining oneself to a single program. I'll load Acid and hook it up with some VST's in conjunction with Reason. Often I'll create loops in FL because I just find it easier.

Acid is a lovely program though! Haven't tried it all that much but I did fool around with it last summer and I loved it.
The thing I meant about Reason making everything sound the same was that a lot of users use the same damn presets, same synths, same beats that were included in with the program. Though if you record your own drum hits then it gets a very original and fresh sound. You don't even need a cool mic to make it sound good, just bombard the sounds with an EQ and some effects and you'll be up and running in a matter of seconds.
CrazyHarij, maybe you should try hook up with Reactor - it's insane!

I tried learning Reaktor and gave up because my head nearly exploded.

That didn't strike like BoC as much as it struck me as some kind of ****ed up b-side to Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2.

Seemed kind of random and loose. One of your weaker tracks although I really enjoyed "Document 2". Just give that one a good title! :)

I've stopped using samples for my drums for a bit and I'm now experimenting with using Subtractor for the hits. Some nice odd sounds you can get out of it. Sounds like you're trying some of that as well, if I'm right.

Can you tell me what program you use to make that awesome shit?

I recall reading that same exact tutorial. When I followed it, everything seemed all nice and logical.

The problem is that it never stuck in memory.

you will learn nothing by doing something once.

Believe me, it was an ongoing struggle and it just never stuck.

I'm content with other programs that offer already intact synthesizers.

Yeah, I'm definitely taking back my statements about reason being limited, the subtractor in particular seems to have an infinite amount of uses if you're patient and creative enough to come up with the sounds for it.

I'm also trying things out abit with the malstrom, you can get very original sounds out of it if you make use of all the panels and settings, and of course, experiment.

Aye, I don't got quite the hang of using the Subtractor for drums just yet, but it sure is fun playing around with it.

Aye, I'm not quite used to using the Subtractor in such a manner, but it's fun to play around with.

Last track I made before this experimentation phase was Cubric, sort of an accident of a song.

well ok but its a shame to spend $500 on a program you dont use :)

Oh, let's just say that I... uhh, extensively sampled it. :)

Yeah, I think I mentioned in IRC that I really like that track.
