More RAM, and a better card.

I'd go for a socket 939 motherboard + processor. That'll be the main AMD Athlon 64 platform. And I'd at least buy a this-generation-videocard, since the next-gen-cards are gonna come out pretty soon.

well considering i just bought the 9800 pro, i did that becuase i only intend to game hl2, ive been with Hl for the past like what 7 years? im not strafing away from HL its all i need :)

Alright, then you probably don't need such a good processor.

yeah that is true, but i wanna get sick frame rates and faster application works and stuff

If you are certain with staying with your 9800pro, then I would go with that, although I would recommend thinking about buying something with alittle more power, maybe a 6600GT or an X800XL. Also, go with a gig of ram. You will really really notice the difference, and because you have gone with the skt754 you can just get 2x512mb sticks that arn't paired up for dual channel mode as that socket type only supports single channel, so that will keep the cost down.

And one other thing, be careful when you are fitting your VGA silencer, as my mate buggered up his card fitting his, did somethign to the memory on it. Just goto take your time and don't over tighten screws.

y are u all saying for him to upgrade his ram to 1gig if he is getting 1gig

oops :S thought I read that he is getting only half a gig. My mistake

For the price, that's pretty neat... foxtrot, what did you expect him to pull off with 600bucks, a 6800SLI combo?

Go down from the 3700 to a socket 939 3000 or 3200+ and then get an x800xl. Drop the pro ram, and get 1gb plain xms xl latency.

Thanks for the heads up about the fan. I'll make sure I don't make that mistake

get a 3000+ venice core, they overclock like crazy. on site got it to out class the fx55.

Good stuff so far. I'd recommend Socket 939 if you want an upgrade path though. Also socket 939 fits the new X2 dual cores.

Yeah I might go for the 939 then, you think i would cost more?

I still say he should go with a cheaper cpu and cheaper ram, then go with a high end video card. That 9800 wont last much longer.

I only plan to play HL2, and asus :) on newegg the 3700 is 285 :)

Your 9800 wont be able to handle all the whizbanged features that hl2 will have after aftermath comes out.

Yeh but its an older CPU that doesn't have dual channel memory support. Might seem like a good deal, but when you come to upgrade, you are going to have to get a new motherboard because teh 754 socket type isn't going to last as long as the 939 socket type.
