For my brother.

As said before my brother is in the market for a new computer, and I am comparing the system I could build for him to prebults. I used bits and pieces of the Anandtech guide. He is using the system for burning cd's, intenet, and word documents. He also plans to do little to no gaming (hence the cheap card). Talked to my brother today, and I changed a couple things. Final setup (not going to order it for a few days so if you have suggestions please tell me soon) Anyway here it is:

Case:

Antec Black ATX ~$69

Mobo:

ASUS "A7V8X-X" ~$49

CPU:

AMD Sempron 2600+ 1.833GHz ~$83

Video card:

CHAINTECH nVIDIA GeForce FX5200 ~$52

RAM:

Corsair Value Select 512 DDR PC3200 ~$82

Hard drive:

Seagate 160GB 7200RPM IDE ~$100

CDRW drive(s):

Lite-On Black 52X32X52X16 Combo Drive ~$45

Floppy drive:

SONY Black 1.44MB 3.5inch ~$10

Misc:

Microsoft Windows XP HOME Edition w/ SP2 ~$94

Logitech Internet Keyboard & Mouse Bundle ~$20

Total: $602

The 5200 should suit him fine. If he does game it will be very light, and he doesn't mind low settings. So I think the 5200 should suit him fine (unless you can find a cheap 9600)

good. although you can get that same HD for $70 shipped on other vendors from pricewatch.com. + you can get xp home OEM for $70 shipped if you look on pricegrabber.com.

 Get that one, that is a very killer deal, even though it's an LE. But still, it'd probably be able to play Hl2 like 1024 x 728 all settings low-mid.

yeah, the LE card is just a non-pro 9600, afaik.. a better card, but you decide for yourself if you want to save that $13, b/c it's not drastic improvment.

Yes get that LE it's the same as a 9600 non pro the graphics will look pretty good and it will run decent. Certainly better than any 5200.

I payed $1,500 for a computer almost exactly like that about a year and a half ago...computer prices these days, outrageous.

My old board was an A7V8X - X. It was great, until i ESD'd it. I like it more than my current MSI K8N Neo Plat.

If you can, build him the cheapest socket 754 platform if possible, sell mother, steal shit, do whatever you have to - it will allow you to drop in a 4000+ rated CPU in the future, Socket A is a dead end platform..

i know what a sempron is. but the socket 939 platform is much better in terms of upgradeability in the future.
