so half-life 2 is really awsome in many ways, but.. I just dont dig on the way hl2 has this social environment to it with alyx and .. dog... and all.. it just seems a little childish. The acting and what you are put into socially with them all the time, maybe its not the fact that you meet these folks, i dislike, rather the way its done as it is. Could be better IMO. I simply loved the way half-life was done all cinematic and mysterious, a really cool experience. HL2 just didn't have the same feel to it.

Anyone else feel like this?

Err!? Character development is anything but childish. Yeah, but I do however know what you're getting at with the different feel. Not such a bad thing though.

It wasn't as Half-lifey as it could have been, if you get my drift.. :O

You know what would be great? A thread dedicated to those who are determined to find anything completely inane that's wrong with this game. That way, they can all have a nice circle-jerk while they reflect on the many ways in which HL2's physics system wasn't 100% realistic.

I'm not sure how you would have expected the characters to be introduced. Maybe if everyone teleported in and started talking to you like you were a dead pop star. Now THAT would be mysterious.

To answer your question, I didn't find that to be the case.

it does seem a bit different, obviously.... i think hl2 makes up for it with better graphics physics and imo gameplay as well...

alright lets see

AphexT: I agree character development is not childish its great.. when its convincing. To me, character interaction and "development" in hl2 just wasn't.

Duracell: I don't read you there. :S

JCampbell: I just never saw anyone on these forums yet with a similar opinion (thanks for the correction fragger) about this.

they're making the way for the alyx [love] expansion.

Half Life 3 will be like Tomb Raider, but with Alex. So I've heard.

No, I'd imagine Half Life 3 will be Gordon again. What was said would be that Alyx might become a playable character in a Half Life 2 expansion. Different things. And I imagine the expansion would be like Half Life 2, not Tomb Raider. :p

Id place my bests on Gordon doing Alyx in the poop shoot while a headcrab sucks on her nipple. I can just hear it now, Alyx shouting 'Oh oh Larmarr awww Larmarr baby....' and maybe throw in a combine elite being rammed by a Strider just for kicks...

I don't agree with you but I don't disagree completely.
I think that HL2 has the best character interaction in any FPS ever and that it will be the standard for the next little while. However, I do think that there is plenty of room for improvement in the future.

I personally would like to see AI 'improvisation' a little bit more (saying things directly according to your actions, do things in different orders, do/say more interesting things when just standing idle that fit the situation).

I would also like to see more mandatory (you have to do it to continue the game), 'inane' interactions; ones that aren't challenging, action packed or push the story forward-- they just fit your character. Plugging in the teleporter or playing with dog at BME are some examples. These would draw out the character sequences longer and give you a better connection with them which would have given the Mossman plot twist more of an impact.

As this is the first time such techniques have been used, they have had no constructive criticism on which to build on. Until now the technology has not been avaliable for such things.

Those who are moaning about it not being good enough I find are mindless. For a start we have something which no other game poseses and we should be greatful that our favourite game utilizes this technology first. We should also appreciate the fact that Valve needs information from us to improve further on it, which we couldn't do before HL2 was released.

Overall I think what was done was done very well considering they had no community involvement in which to help build on something so big. I look forward to future releases from Valve in which our constructive critcism will benefit in the areas we have demonstrated possible improvements.

Although I think these opinion threads are annoying because everyone feels the need to make a new thread I find it more annoying every thread seems to be hijacked by someone with little respect for the poster. However since the topic is HL2 compared to HL1 I will say I was not at all impressed with HL1 (more of a quake guy at the time) but I am quite impressed with HL2 all bugs aside.

Maybe you should note the fact that topics do get sidetracked, and the author posted a request to get back OT and so we did rather than carrying on with other discussion. That is showing respect if you ask me.

Don't get me wrong here the physics are amazing and the graphics machine is too. If I should rate the game i'd give it something like 9,5 but i just dont really think the acting of the characters fits in and feels too good. I loved in HL when nobody said shit and you were mister unknown hero saving the world.. Now everyone knows you (ok no surprise) and apparantly barney owes you a beer and generally acts like you and he were best friends.

I understand where your coming from, but I guess Valve just wanted a way to show off the new technologies they have developed, which I can't blame them for wanting to do so, but maybe a little more discreetly would have been appropriate?

He owed you a beer in Half Life as well. And considering the two worked together, I wouldn't be too surprised if they were good mates.
