I run steam, double click HL, it says preparing to play, and it just hangs there and after about 5 mins i get a screen saying ive timed out

everyone else gets the exact same... i dont even know how there are people in the 1.6 servers right now... is there a way to play without steam? if so that would probably work because steam can suck my butt for all i care
