Back a few months ago or even longer... I backed up my half-life 2, half-life, counter strike, day of defeat etc... onto a dvd.

I haven't gotten around to reinstalling it cause I was never interested, now that i'm bored and i'm trying to... I have this error.

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Assertion failed!

Program: I:\program files\steam\steamrestore.exe
File: u:\rel_hl1\goldsrc\public\utlvector.h
Line: 178

Expression: IsValidIndex(i)

For more information on how your program can cause an assertion failure, see the Visual C++ documenation on asserts

(Press Retry to debug the application - JIT must be enabled)

And when I try to click retry it gives me an application failure whatever for steamrestore.exe

Damnit... now I either have to redownload it all from steam again, or use my brothers discs if they work. He has a seperate account, I bought it online, he bought the discs themselves... so I might be lucky in that regard.

EDIT: Blarg i'm an idiot... sleep deprivation is evil.

I needed to not run it from the DVD. heh.

EDIT 2: Son of a bitch, now steam isn't recognizing my HL game of the year when I install it. How do I install without downloading?

you can download the hl game of the year easily from steam, but for the hl2 there really is no other way and ive never done the back up thing before never had a need to. what is on the cd exactly? is there anyway you can just put them back your self.

I would search inside the DVD and try to find .gcf files, which are basically giant content files for games, engines, and media. Install Steam on its own, update it, log in to your account, close it, then copy all the .gcf files from the DVD into d:\Steam\SteamApps\ (or whatever your directory is), then relaunch Steam and log in again.

It should work fine.

Could it be that steam isn't installed right? Giving you those errors.
Maybe reinstall steam and then put your .gcf files under the right steam folder.

In the edit I clarified that my issue was that I was trying to run the .exe from within the DVD. once I copied it to my steam folder, it went perfectly.

As for the half-life... I just downloaded it, and it seemed to go really fast.

well acctually in my post i meant its easier to download hl1 because its smaller and hl2 is around 4-5 gigs
