OK I've just finished Half-life (i need to every few months) anyway its just started to come together.
The G-man says (after the defeat of Nihilanth) "Most of yout weapons were government issue" bit later "The border region - Xen - is now under our control." Then he goes on about his employers.
What if there are three regions in half Life two.
Region 1 - Earth
Region 2 -Xen
Region 3 -Combine home world/dimension
What if Xen was a buffer between Earth and the combine. Say the Combine are a VERY powerful but limited race...for instance lots of soldiers heavily armed vehicles and munitions a warrior kind of planet but they dont have the 'magic' power of Nihilanth. So they could not take Xen out. While Xen had only limited creatures and Nihilanth was limited to mearly defending his region against Earth and combine incursions.
Anyway a powerful government body or something on Earth found Xen and this other region beyond that. They decide to occupy these regions (power, alien minerals, whatever) and so started up Black Mesa as an experimental base o develop transdimenional gateways. Using the transporter technology they sent troops across into Xen to try to conquer the place but are held off by Nihilanth's powers. Remember the dead grunts and burned out tanks under a xen sky while talking to the G-man?
During the fighting one of these task forces found the material the 'administrator' wanted testing. Black mesa follows orders and runs the experiment (Freeman), unfortunatly it starts a massive cascade failure and Xen creatures start pouring into Black Mesa. With most of its experienced troopers dead or fighting in Xen the administrator is forced to send in relativly green troops (or low security rating) into Black Mesa with orders to contain the situation (Sheperd). Some of the civilians manage to escape from Black Mesa (Calhoun). Once most of the marines job is done the elite units of the administrator black-ops are sent in the silence the few remaining grunts after they have done most of the work (prevent word getting out).
Anyway Freeman along with other survivors of Black Mesa manage to kill Nihilanth and the G-mans employers garrison Xen. (End of Half Life)
After this the Combine see that there is no longer a powerful figure in Xen only a people they havnt seen before. Combine forces pour into Xen rapidly scattering the few Earth forces holding it. The administrator and its group totally failed to realise the full military powers of the Combine before they started to attack Xen themselves and so with most of thier experienced troops dead/scattered and thier powerbase depleted they are not able to contain the invasion.
Meanwhile the Combine, having occupied Xen, now come across earth and pour accross the gateways onto Earth which is not ready at all to face the alien threat and are quickly overwhelmed.
Start of Half Life 2 - Most major cities have been destroyed and the human race is subjegated, only in City 17 and a few other areas where the last of the administrators forces have been gathered (Calhoun, Vance, Kleiner, Freeman) are able to form a resistance that has any effect. Some of the surviving Xen aliens recognise that the Combine occupation of both thier regions is enough to ally with the earth resistance (rumours of fighting alongside some of the aliens from Half Life) as they are lesser threat to Xen survival.
Problems from the inter region fighting has lead to more animalistic creatures reaching Earth from both Xen and combine territory adding another terror to the subjegated earth.
What about that?
NB: Region means anything from other worlds to dimensional rifts etc. Not sure what, in Half-Life, Xens area of space is.
P.S Sorry about spelling
P.P.S. If youve had enough patience to read to the botton thanks
