--first of all if you're going to gay up my thread with "Posted before" or "old news" or some other elitist condescending bullshit, save it. if a mod see's this post as unfit for this forum / board then they'll lock / move it.--

Well, with the recent developments of hl2's preload being delayed and seeing the patch, and cs:source beta testing going underway the quickness they've worked on fixing patches and stuff like that, i've developed a theory about what they're doing. it's probably more hoping than realistic.

I think Valve has already had HL2 gone gold, they dont need Source to be flawless/bugless in order to ship the game, because you can always update it later (Re: Monday) when the game arrives in stores or begins pre-loading / pre-purchasing, since Steam is (essentially) required to run the game and it's mods.

HL2 could have gone gold a couple weeks ago and been into mastering / duplication mode and being shipped to stores for an Aug / Sept release, for the reasons i've stated above.

maybe valve patched everything and the software ordering process / credit card authorization and everything because they knew they'd release HL2 on monday or something. who knows!

it sure is a good theory and something to hope for, though!

Not everyone has an internet connexion, so they won't be able to ship the game then update it later. I'm sure you wouldn't like to buy a game and get home to find it needs a patch to run and you only have an old 14.4 modem or no modem at all.

ok i dont know weather to have a big go at you because that is such a tease to me :D

or weather to to just say WOW WOW sounds so good!

that would be great if that was true. But when it goes gold wouldn't they have to tell us about it? tell the shops about it so they can put the final release date comfirmed in their shops?
also if and when hl2 goes gold i know someone from valve or someone who knew would tell someone...then they tell someone and so on and so on untill the info is on the net.

If it was in duplication, it would have been on the net by now.

Well.. It hasn't. And no, it wasn't good thinking. Back to the drawingboard.

I have been thinking the same thing. Maybe I'm just clueless, but why would they preload the game unless in preparation for release of hl2? They wouldn't preload it and have it sit there, wait for game to go gold and ship and everything. Would they? :upstare:

I bet they secretly went gold and now they are preloading it because the shipment of hl2 to retailers is ready. Maybe the real reason that the preload was delayed is because the hl2 shipment to retailers was delayed?

Bah, I'm rambling. :rolling:

Yes you are :), i don't think anyone could keep the gold status of the most anticipated game of all time a secret. It hasn't gone gold , but surely we're extremely close to it. 1-2 weeks is my current opinion, assmuning that PC Gamer review is of HL2 and if that's true it also assumes Valve will have a finished copy ready to give to be reviewed.

I had a whacked theory that they were delaying the pre-load to coincide with the gold announcement, but that's the a load of bullshit that spawned from the mind of a nutcase.

Hrmm.... or maybe they are putting a very lethal virus on each cd and when it's released about 10 million people will die in days...... that's my theory.

They are just starting to preload the parts of the game that won't change anymore, they still might have a few bugs that they want to fix, and that's why it's not gold yet.

Wait till monday people, i think everything is going to start going then, advertisement and everything. Gold should not be too far from then. I hope so, id hate to see it extend even more.

While i share your belief it hasnt gone gold, dont rule out anything... Valve kept half-life 2 from the knowledge of the world since the release of half life 1, they deffiently could keep the gold status a surprise.
