I don't feel like explaining the hell I have gone through to fix this.
After I install Steam (again and again and again), I update it and get this message before I see the Steam ID screen:
"Steam has encountered a problem and needs to close."
I've done everything. I've been playing HL2 happily since the day of its release, and I tried HL2: DM successfully yesterday, and just now the problem randomly arises. I've reinstalled, checked for malware/viruses, defragmented my HDD, reinstalled some more, personally gone into the registry to delete every trace of Valve and Steam, etc.
Can anyone help?
