My website's been hacked

I'm actually really upset about this, I put a lot of time and effort into setting up that site, and now it's been hacked. It's made me realise how awful people can be.

Somehow somebody had got my ftp account details even though I never told anyone or posted them on the internet or anything. I've changed them now, but I'm worried it could happen again. Does anyone know about hackers and how they do stuff like this?

The same happened to my site just a week ago. It had been online for 2 weeks! There is no backup so it has to be totally recreated from the start. And it was an important website, too, to promote the star wars fanfilm me and my mates are doing. But sith happens.

There must have been some sort of password checking or something. Do you share the machine you work on?
For there are programs which can be run in the background that record passwords.
No idea how this could be done remotely, but o well, im not a hacker or expert so

if you knew much php you could put in some code to make it lock put the IP after a certain number of guesses, won't make it impossible for a hacker, but it will make it more annoying

edit: oh wait you said FTP stuff was guessed. Maybe you could set it to only allow your ip address(or a range of trusted ones) to log in?

I feel sorry for you. Are you using one of your own servers as hosting ?

I'm using a webhosting company. They can restore my files, they're just taking aages to do it.


Rajesh and Hiranya ( :dozey: )were very helpful, but apparently they're not allowed to do stuff like that, so I have to wait for someone higher up in the company to do it.

No offense but what idiot doesn't back up his website every once in a while? I don't know how hackers would go about doing something like this. I suggest you check your computer for keyloggers, and if you are using a dumb password change it a longer password containing numbers and capital letters.

Why are people upset when stuff gets stolen, they have insurance and can replace it, right?

It's just not very nice to know that somebody can (and would) do something like that for no apparent reason. And I was careful, my password was very difficult for a machine to guess.

If your password was complex enough then they wouldn't have guessed it. Or maybe there was some security hole somewhere else.

Yeah, I think the mistake I made was using the same password for everything, forums, email etc.
