Was working just fine the other day. Today my brother tries starting it... red ring of death.

What do I do?

I've barely played the system in comparison with other people... I've always babied it and properly cared for it.

And it just randomly does it out of the blue. <sighs>

Send it to micro - free month of live gold, and a new system.

Unless you don't have a warranty anymore..

Did I have to pay for the warranty when I bought it at bestbuy? Or was that just a bestbuy warranty?

I have my receipt here and I bought it mid april of this year.

What number do I have to call to have them know I'm going to be sending it in? There a page where it has all the information about everything I need?

I forget how it was, I remembered I called Microsoft themselves, I didn't have anything to do with the store, then Microsoft sent me a box and stuff to put it in then I had to ship it to them, then they sent me a new one. I think you might have to have the receipt from when you bought the system for the 3 years thing, because Microsoft extended it, even if you have a 1 year warranty or whatever with the store, Microsoft still gives you 3 years. Just call their support thing and they'll tell you how it's done.

I just chopped up some onions prior to finding out my xbox had RROD... and it feels like I've just had my heart ripped out by all this. I mean, I know it can get rectified, and I don't feel really horrible, but my eyes are still affected by the sulphuric acid and it feels like I've been crying for my dead console.

You have a 3 year warranty from Microsoft for the RRoD. Once you receive your fixed system they give you another 3 years from then on.

I believe the number to call is 1800-4-my-xbox . They will send you a box to ship it back in.

Make sure your AV cable is plugged in all the way. There are a few other troubleshooting steps to go through before determining that your 360 has actually died, but I forgot them.

Towel trick! ;)

A friend of mine said that actually works. But I'm confused as to how wrapping your 360 in a towel makes it work. Seems to me like it would melt everything inside.

The basic premise is that older 360s have weak soldering on the GPU heatsink, and over time the heatsink becomes looser and pulls away from the GPU, which is what causes the RRoD. Wrapping your 360 in a towel heats up the console to such a temperature that it causes the solder to melt and then re-bind the heatsink to the GPU.

all 360's are covered for 3 years against the RROD i believe
and you DO NOT get a new system... you get a refurbished one

my advice, send it to a repair center ASAP

Mine RROD'd awhile back, but I've had it back for nearly a year and it's been fine, dunno about these people that get 4 or 5 bad consoles

Buy a gaming pc, it only fails you once a new game with super graphics that has never been seen before is released.

I've done everything to try and fix the problem(well, without opening it up), and nothing seems to work. So I will send it in.

Thanks guys.

My friend and I were just as skeptical about it but it actually worked on his 360.

DON'T send it to a repair center. Once it opened EVERYTHING is void, all warranties. Just send it to Microsoft, you get a month of live for free atleast.

Huh? When you send it to Microsoft it goes to one of their repair centers...

He means that you shouldn't send it to a generic "We Fix Xbox's!" repair center.

I'll fix your Xbox. Send it to me.

Including the receipt.

/hugs and pats on back

Shhhhh, it's ok Raz. Let it all out. REAL men cry....for their Xbox.

So your Xbox is :x then?

What model is it?

...and if you can't get it under warranty, remember that people will be so jealous when you tell them you have a very expensive doorstop.

Bring that brick back to best buy, with your receipt, and get a replacement.

They're not going to replace it. I didn't get a warranty with them. I'm going to send it to microsoft.

And it's not a brick, it's a dead baby. My baby. I coddled that little ****er and it ****ing choked on me without warning.

*sigh*

Every time I give you advice, it's never good enough for you.

Virus, it's not your advice it's you, you smell, take a shower.

:) Friend to a friend, just trying to look out for you.

Seriously, I heard some people just took theirs back to best buy and got a new one. It's a problematic console, and they might be making exceptions.

I just suggest you give it a shot. Sending it back is very inconvienient and takes longer, and you just get another refurbished one with the old chips, so you'll get the problem again.

I think that the new ones at best buy won't have the problem. They have released the 3rd revision. If you get one from MS it will be the first revision.

So that's how friends treat each other? I try to help you out, and you say that to me ;(

Well it seems like a ton of trouble to me. I have to go to the one I bought it from likely(which isn't hard), bring my console... ask them if they'll be able to help me even though I didn't purchase any warranty with them(which they'll probably shut me down)... pay a hefty restocking fee(even though it's not called for in this situation). They'll probably also request my receipt and take it from me and I won't be able to use it for warranty with microsoft.

I might try it, but I doubt it'll work out well.

EDIT: And oh shit, I just realized it wasn't of this year, I meant last year I got it.

You're still able to send it to Microsoft. Don't worry about it. You can't however take it to Best Buy.

Just call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX and tell them the situation. Everything will be good to go after that.

Going to call them tomorrow. Punched the number in my phone so I can wake up and do it first thing after I wake up provided it's the right time.

I haven't play my 360 since GTAIV. I have a feeling it will bork around Xmas time with all the games coming out.

My xbox developed the red ring, so I phoned the xbox support team and explained it, they ran through some general questions (whats the serial number, is the light on the power supply green when you turn the xbox on etc etc).

Make sure youve made an xbox repair note on their main site though, so its listed for them to see. Just helps the process along as I got put through to what was basically a laptop in India...'Thank you so much for telling me this' omg.

Having decided it was a hardware fault, they emailed me UPS issue papers and said that UPS would come around to pickup on x-date and to ensure I had it boxed appropriately etc etc.

Picked it up after scanning it on the day they quoted, off it went. 2 weeks later, knock on the door, xbox returned safely. Theyd replaced the motherboard and dvd drive, AND given me a month Gold Membership slip...and I didnt pay a single thing.

AND I know for a fact it was out of warranty, HOWEVER I think mine was bought back when they knew they had issues with the hardware if you bought it before x-date (mine was 2 years ago) which is why they ask for the serial number.

So, just phone and get lucky. I guess the only price you have to pay is waiting, and you can check it online through UPS and the xbox repair service.
