I've noticed alot of messages, particularly regarding water, about the purple texture (missing texture) showing up on ppl suddenly, usually in water reflections. What I have been doing when I have this issue is to reset my advanced video options (going in and changing something small, like shadow high to shadow low. Once the change takes affect, you can check to see if the purple water texture is gone by using the stress test. The times that I have run into this isssue, it did not have anything to do with cubemaps.
