why are you asking what is the preferred format? its your decision if you want to use 720p or 1080i. 1080i will be crisper because it displays more pixels. Dont be fooled just because your tv says 'supports' a certain format. look for the maximum format it can do.

It depends on the native res of your set. If it's 720p, then set it to 720. 1080i/p - use 1080i/p.
