NaNo in a Nutshell

What: Writing one 50,000-word novel from scratch in a month's time.

Who: You! We can't do this unless we have some other people trying it as well. Let's write laughably awful yet lengthy prose together.

Why:
The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era's most enchanting art forms! To write without having to obsess over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from our novels at parties. To be able to mock real novelists who dawdle on and on, taking far longer than 30 days to produce their work.

When: You can sign up anytime to add your name to the roster and browse the forums. Writing begins November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at midnight. Once your novel has been verified by our web-based team of robotic word counters, the partying begins.

Where:
You write wherever you’d like. On your computer, on your iPad, on a typewriter---anywhere is fine, just as long as you’re writing! For a more in-depth NaNoWriMo overview, visit the devilishly handsome "What is NaNoWriMo?"and "How NaNoWriMo Works" pages.

You know what, I might just do it this year... My Exams finish on the 2nd so this could work.

omg I've always wanted to write a book but my English sucks!!

I'll probably actually try to finish the first draft of my novel this November (which is sitting at a comfortable 25,000 words now) but I'm not going to submit it there.

200 pages is a lot though, also I'd need a proofreader for sure. but I have less hours at work coming up, this would be much fun!

signed up and ready to go! I'm gunna start writing my plot and summary up but nothing else until the contest starts!

1day1hr11minsand 1 second left!!!!

i'm gunna wing this one too, only writing from the tip of my brain. i have a basic plot and groups of people but that is all!

So I started a little early writing, but I'm 2,064 words out of 50,000 and its fun so far! this is gunna be one fun and crazy month

I'm currently sitting at 61% done. This contest is really fun but I hope they can accept my file for I am using Open Office

I don't have Word, thats why I'm using Open Office. But what your saying is that they can get the file and still see it maybe?

In Open Office. You can go to File, Save As, and save the file as a Microsoft Word .Doc file. And then send it to them in that format. And they can open it.

Did anyone end up sticking this out? I'd love to hear what people came up with, if nothing else.

wrote a sentence, went to go get a drink and never came back

Aww! That's sad to hear. But that said, while Nano is an interesting exercise it's not necessarily conductive to good writing if you have other projects you'd rather be working on!

I skipped it this year, but last year the end result was at least semi-coherent. Ended up butchering it into a few shorts; sadly, I don't think it would've gelled as an actual novel.

I wrote my novel on here, it went very well but I'm going to need much proofreading and such from friends to edit and I'll revise it greatly. I had like 51,000 words by the time I finished. And whats cool is I don't have to do anything with it now and it can sit there until I need it someday. You never know what the world may throw at you and this is my cat in the hat

Script Mania or whatever they call it is next. I think you write Hollywood scripts or TV shows or something. Now that seems cool too :D

I started on the monring of the 28th and less than two days later I came out with 50,014 words. I'm still not entirely sure what my novel is about, besides how gorillas-like pants-are a tool of The Man.

Almost that time again! Is anyone planning on entering this year?

Worst plug ever.

As usual, a number of my friends will bug me to do this. As usual, I will say "OK, I'll try it," and then ignore it completely.

I may do this again, it wasn't that hard. I simply devoted my weekends to writing and gave up a lot of game time but in the end it was fun. Also I'd love to continue my planned trilogy
